Root Want to root phone?

Newbie
I want to root my phone, I have been reading the how-to's and downloaded files. But first I need to back up my apps and programming.. What program can I use the will backup the entire phone? (((Note: I have my htc Incredible programmed to work on Alltel, so I want it to backup the programming too.)))

I am good with computers, but just need a push in the right direction so if I mess up I can get my programming back and programs I bought. Without have to reset it up and re download.

Once you root you can use titanium backup.. I don't think there is an good easy way to do it unrooted.. but you can use appbrain to get all your apps back relatively easily.
 
Ok, I have brainapp. Will it remember my paid apps (only two) so I can redownload and not have to buy again?

If not its only two.


Also should I root to 2.2? I know I have to update my radio before I can. I'm on Alltel and still trying to get my mms working completely.

Google actually will remember your paid apps forever.
