Root Want to try ICS - help me make sure I'm not missing any steps?

JustSomeDude

Android Enthusiast
I've asked this on other forums without answer, so hopefully you guys here can help:
I'm currently on Ineffabilis, which is an amazing GB rom, but I am itching to try the latest ICS roms. I've been hesitant because of reports of overheating/battery issues on the leaks, but after a lot of reading, and particularly this post here, I think I am convinced that chingy has addressed those concerns in Ineffabilis Deus as long as the firmware matches up (running older firmware with the "patches" for ICS roms seems to cause problems, from what I read...).

So, I'm going to take the plunge, but wanted to ask advice on whether I am missing any steps. Especially because I'd like to do everything from the phone. I am S-off, hboot 2.11 (stock hboot, I didn't take the jb one during s-off). So, to move to ICS, I:

1. Nandroid my current setup
(1A. Reset/wipe caches, system, etc?)
2. Flash the latest 3.14.605.5 RUU zip through bootloader to get latest hboot/firmware/radios.
3. Flash Amon Ra 3.15 through bootloader (zip from this post here).
4. Wipe all.
5. Flash Ineffabilis Deus.

And then, if I do have any issues, to return to my GB setup, I:
1. Flash the 2.01.605.11 RUU zip in bootloader.
2. Flash Amon Ra in bootloader.
3. Wipe all.
4. Restore my GB Ineffabilis nandroid.

So, am I missing anything?
Thanks in advance - I just want to make sure I am not missing an important step.

Here's what I was told to do having had the same phone configuration as you. I didn't understand everything so it was a bit painful. May your "luck" be different.

-put new firmware file(containing jpbear hboot) into mini-adb_vigor. Or you can flash the jpBear HBOOT separately as an additional step. I chose to include it in the firmware file (i.e. replace the hboot_* file in the firmware file with the jpBear hboot_* file).
-put rom and kernel onto sd card. Kernel was an additional step for me as I also wanted the overclocking kernel.
-open cmd on PC,enable usb debug, plug in phone
-boot to fastboot(adb reboot bootloader)
-launch amonRa (fastboot boot <recoveryname>.img)
-backup,wipe,flash rom, flash kernel with HBOOT in it.
-boot back to bootloader(adb reboot bootloader)
-flash new firmware:
fastboot erase cache
fastboot oem rebootRUU (this will get you to black htc screen which is RUU mode)
fastboot flash zip firmwarefilename.zip
(if it fails with a hboot pre-update,dont panic, its normal. just repeat the above command and run it again)
This step did fail and was unable to re-execute it ("waiting for device" which apparently I needed to wait at least 10m for that message to clear). If your phone is on the black htc screen, that's OK. That is called RUU mode. You should be able to run FASTBOOT commands from there.

-after it finishes,
fastboot reboot-bootloader
-confirm you have jpbear hboot (version number will be 2.2x which is ICS instead of 2.1x which is GB).
-reboot into your new rom(fastboot reboot)

I've been on ICS for a week or so now. No heat problems and the battery life is the best I've ever had. My ROM is CleanROM 4.5 Standard by scrosler. I use the overclocking kernel by SebastianFM, cranked all the way up when the screen is on; throttled down when the screen is off (but don't make the lower end less then 540 is what I found so background tasks have enough juice).

thanks thornev.

justsomedude, your steps will work, they are just a bit more tedious.

thornevs description is only flashing the firmware itself, and saves you from flashing the large system image, since youre going re-flash it anyway, and gets everything done in one shot,so saves you from multiple reboots.

holler if you have questions. :)

as the phone turns off when flshing the firmware, just make sure you give it plenty of time to turn back on.

Scotty - I didn't want to divulge my source in case I got it wrong. I knew you'd jump in to correct me. Was hoping to save The Delivery Guy another of his mammoth responses.

Thanks for the replies guys. So, the reason I was thinking of the steps I mentioned was that I wanted to be able to do everything from the phone -- both because I have limited access to a PC (have a mac at home, so I unlocked/rooted/s-off-ed all in one shot on my work PC), and because I am just used to doing everything in recovery or bootloader from my Evo4G days.

So, scotty, based on you saying I shouldn't need to run the full RUU to get everything I need, does that mean I can just replace my step #2 with flashing the Firmware found here? The one labeled " [ICS][2.25][STOCK][5-7]PH98IMG.zip" I assume?

So, it would be:
1. Nandroid my current setup
2. Flash the firmware zip from 5-7 through bootloader to get latest hboot/firmware/radios.
3. Wipe all.
5. Flash Ineffabilis Deus.

Is that correct?

Thanks again for the help, I'm just feeling a little rusty with my HTC flashing after spending 5 months on a Motorola. ;)

thats correct :)

replace the stock hboot with the jpbear ICS hboot if you want to still be able to use fastboot commands(fastboot flash and fsatboot boot),and replace the stock recovery with amon(or whatever you use) so you can only have to do 1 hboot flash, and you will have to reboot between flashing the fimware and flashing the rom. at this point, you will be on imcompatible firmware,so your abilities to to anything on the booted phone will be limited.

with some further thot, your steps might be better:
-place rom, kernel(if aplicable) and PH98IMG onto sd card
-boot to permanent recovery via quickboot app
-make nandroid
-wipe,flash rom
-use recovery option to boot to bootloader(if using amon)
-flash firmware
-reboot
-remove ph98img

:)

Thanks for the modified steps, that worked well. I used the stock hboot (since I haven't seen the need for fastboot while s-off), and the recovery did not need to be reflashed, so that was good. Thanks again!
