Wanting to root my Note3,but have a few questions

trylle

Newbie
Sorry for making 3 topics at the same, but I feel I might get the best answer in general questions on Note3 section. If a modd can delete my other topics that would be great to.

So.I have had my Note 3 almost 1 year now and im thinking of rooting my phone, but ive never done it before.I have read through the Rooting post and I have a few questions ofc which I need answered before I do start the flashing.

So first is first.I live in Norway and my Android version is 4.4.2. Im just concerned which ROM's I should install do and how I can do this. Is it like I use Odin to flash and its rooted, and after that I can go on xda.com and install any CFW like cyanagon and others? I know there are quite a few ROMs that I can choose from, and I just want to find the best one.

There are so much bloatware that are on my Note that I just want off my phone and the stupid KNOX thing I want off to. When talking about KNOX is there something I need to know, like is there anything I need to know of enabling "Download Mode"?.

I also want to change my bootloader screen with something different than the usual Phone model stuff. Is this possible, like Optimus Prime showes on screen with the transforming sound or Android pissing on apple logo or android taking a bite of apple or such.

Thanks for any replies I get,Im hoping to try and root my phone today.

I heard about TowelRoot a long time ago but never had the use for it because i was already rooted, but i recently lost root after installing a custom recovery which i didnt really need anyway but i was just taking precautions.

TowelRoot came to kind to regain root so i thought why not? It wont hurt just to install an .apk. So I installed and ran the .apk and the program said to press a button and if the program reboots the phone then it didnt work, so i thought fair enough and pressed the button and it said it was successful and that I am now rooted.

So I immediately opened Titanium Backup and it started to work, as well as the Root Checker program from the Google Play store.

The disadvantage of using TowelRoot at the moment is that I cant authorize each individual program to have Super User rights but that may be because I havent bothered to reinstall SuperSU yet, which may change that situation.

Its much faster & easier than turning off and using Odin in your phone and would prevent alot of people who are new to rooting a phone from going wrong somewhere & ending up bricking their phone or ruining it. I wish i had been recording the screen when it said successful and I tried the Root Checker app before and after rooting but im sure there are plenty of videos available on Youtube of it being successful.

I used Titanium Backup to remove unwanted applications, and Rom Toolbox paid to change the boot logo and boot logo on another phone but i believe it works for the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 too.

thanks for getting back at me, I dunno about towelroot,I dont know where to find it tho.

I think I will try with Odin flash, where can I get the correct version for my Note3 SM-N9005. And also what ROM should I download. All I SuperUser which gives admin rights. so do I have to download Odin sw first, and then find the CFW that I want to root it with or how does it work?

I am fairly new when it comes to rooting,so im not sure if my questions makes sense or not, or any case stupid.

How about on xda,is that a place for the more xperienced android rooters?

I also need to know which guides I need to follow:

Go to towelroot.com and click the middle icon, the icon/symbol in brown. Then it will download a program to your phone.

Run that program and then when inside the program click the button labelled "make it ra1n" then you should have root straight away.

If you want to learn how to do it only via XDA then you can click the web link below and install the programs listed underneath the video too. Or if you dont like clicking web links yoi can use the search feature on XDA forums for your phone or click on the "Forums" button on fhe XDA website and search the list until you reach the forum which says "Samsung Galaxy Note 3".

You dont need to be an experienced rooter with TowelRoot, but alot of people who choose the long route using Odin are bricking their phone or getting scary messages because they arent in the right forum or havent followed the instructions exactly as they should be.

I cant advise on any Rom to install as I have the stock Rom that came with the phone installed, as I find the stock Rom much better in terms of compatibility of applications I can install and general stability of the phone while running the applications.

N3 on 4.4.2...towelroot worked perfectly for me, using instrux found here and elsewhere. I had difficulty downloading tr.apk properly. I had to go to free WiFi and put it on an old Droid X GB, then transfer to computer, then install on N3. Without root, the N3 is sort of silly, but with root it has become my main computer, bloat controlled. Don't forget a $mall donation to the dev if you use towelroot.

I wouldnt say its silly but it will definitely have a positive impact when using the phone, especially with some applications that developers choose to remove or add new features that were useful or that break the functionality of the application or disabld it from working in the first place, after which someone who has root privileges can just restore a previous version of the application using Titanium Backup.

Better than having some battery draining system features like on the iPhone which will kill your battery before you've finished your dinner

Towelroot doesn't work on my phone. Note 3 international unlocked. Even though it did previously before I did a factory reset. All I get is "this phone is not supported". Any suggestions?

with towelroot, is there only 1 ROM I can use/choose,or can I choose from different ones? also do I need to enable anything on my phone. And do I need to have my phone connected via Download mode before I do this. and lastly do I need to get it via download on .APK file on phone or pc?

I also need a detailed on how to do by step by step.

Can I install CFW with towelroot or is that only for Odin?

And if I choose to use Odin, which guide do I follow?

Unfortunately you might have to use the Odin method now. Just keep watching videos or reading information about the rooting process and make sure you have any doubts in your mind answered beforr you go ahead and do it via Odin, and make sure any text you read is for the international version or SM-N9005, sometimes written as "SM-9005" or "N9005" which doesnt help to help people feel secure they have got the right version.

I used the old version of Odin that is in the thread in the web link below on XDA. I also had to flash the root package twice. Flash it once and then something similar to "cache" appears on the Note 3 screen with the progress bar on fhe Note 3 screen stopping at half way. Then I restarted the Note 3 straighg into download mode for Odin again and flashed the root package again and it was successful. This happens every time I root & may confuse or panic people who are rooting for fhe first time.

What I did only a few days ago after losing root & decided not to pull out cables & wires and find the root folder that I saved previously. I decided to give TowelRoot a try as I had heard of it previously:

1. Type towelroot.com into any phone web browser.
2. On the towelroot.com web page click fhe brown symbol/icon in the middle of the page.
3. It downloads an .apk to your phone when you click the icon. Find the .apk in downloads
4. Open the .apk now and click on the "Make it ra1n" button inside the application.
5. Enjoy root.

With TowelRoot is as powerful as using Odin. You can install same amount of Roms and do the same amount of things that require root priviledges as Odin. Im using Titanium Backup which requires root, which I have been given from TowelRoot.

The only difference being you only need to install an .apk to gain root with TowelRoot, where as you need cables and need to be sitting at your computer to use Odin and need to know which version to download etc.

You need to go to your phone settings in the General section, and then move down the list until you find an option called "unknown sources". Make sure that option is checked/ticked. This will enable you to install the .apk from TowelRoot website after youve downloaded it.

You might also need take OFF the check/tick from "verify apps" option too.

thanks to both of you. Is there any way for me to use towelroot with a specific ROM from my choosing?

I do not only wish to root, but choose the design of the CFWs so I have something to fall back on.

and if I choose Odin, what version do I need to download and do I need to stick with (International) Galaxy Note 3: All Things Root Guide or
How to Root your Note 3 - A complete Novice's Guide. I live in Noway and my phone model number is SM-N9005.

I also want to add that I want to learn installing different ROM's via Odin and other ROMs

also what is chainfire ROM/root?

Chainfire is just another name for the CF-AutoRoot file that roots your phone using Odin.

I would suggest trying TowelRoot method then coming back if it doesn't work for you.

The web link below is for the "CF-AutoRoot" file that you need to flash to your phone using Odin. It is the KitKat 4.4 version for the SM-N9005 version of the Samsung Galaxy Note 3.

Or you could just go to TowelRoot.com and install 1 apk which should work 1st time.

Big thanks to both of you for assisting me on the knowledge I seek to root my phone. I will do backup on my phone tomorrow and I will try towelroot and install SuperUser stuff and see what I can do with my phone then. And if I want more ill come back to this thread.

1 last question tho,if I use towelroot, does my phone resets, meaning everything will be lost?

Nothing changes when you root your phone, no matter whether you use the TowelRoot method of the Odin method. Everything stays the same on your hardware.

The only thing that changes is that you now have the ability to use applications that need root, and the ability to install ROMs and lots more.

Towel root is the only way i know of which doesn't wipe data or trip KNOX. to run custom ROMs you need the APK for Safestrap Recovery 3.72. but don't flash ROMs in slots unless you like soft-bricking your phone with a black screen of death. for some reasons the only ROMs i tried work only in the stock slot. so make a backup of your stock ROM before you flash a custom. that way if it fails you can still recover your stock setup.

I'm currently running HyperDrive RLS8 with the S5 ported apps and UI. in fact i only rooted and installed that ROM to have notifications without icons clogging up my status bar and because i didn't want to wait for the Galaxy Note 4 or downgrade to the S5 to get the new TouchWiz.

Now while KNOX status is 0x0 there is a padlock symbol on startup with a 'CUSTOM' flag, so KNOX or no KNOX this would still invalidate warranty. i have not found a method to remove that icon from the boot screen. nor do i know what exactly it means. it's not carrier unlocked...

Odin doesn't wipe data....when you do it you gain Admin rights to the phone. Do you have a Web link to anyone losing data by rooting their phone? All of the videos of people rooting their phone on Youtube show them still having their data and applications etc on their phone.

He can install a custom recovery to install ROMs on his phone too, which I would recommend someone do if they're new to rooting their phone as they clearly are...and won't understand much of the terminology in the text you use..

so,it took a while to even attempt rooting, but I have been busy lately. But when I installed the .apk file from towelroot I got that my phone version isnt supported so I cant use towelroot. I downloaded root checker after and it said I wasnt rooted.

So I guess I have to use Odin. So can I download any version of Odin or is the latest version the best?
And what kinda of .tar or .jar files do I need and, ive watched that video of that guy on xda.com that gave a instruction on youtube but it doesnt say where I can download those.
I have downloaded Odin3 1.85version and CF-auto Root file and it contains md5 and a exe, some dll and a .ini but no tar/jar files

Help is greatly appreciated.
