Help Warning: Headset plug going bad

I plug my phone into the aux input in my car using the headset jack almost daily, and lately I've had an issue where it no longer detects when I disconnect it.

It has been working great since I purchased it near the Triumph's launch, but the last week or so, I plug it in and the music starts playing perfectly. But sometimes when I unplug it from the headset jack, the phone still thinks that it's plugged in, keeps playing music (although muted because it thinks it's playing through the headset).

So hours later I'll find it still playing music, and again, because it thinks the headset it still plugged in, I don't get any notifications (although I think there's a setting I can change to have it play through the speakers too).

So anyway, the TLDR:

It seems that the sensor in my headset jack is going bad, it may just be that I got a faulty phone, but I wanted to give people a heads up.

Yep, bad jack. Had the exact same thing happen to me. But don't worry, it gets worse. It'll get stuck on headset so you can only talk on the phone using speaker or a bluetooth headset. And then, it will start connecting/disconnecting every couple of seconds...so even if you are talking on bluetooth, it will switch off thing you plugged a plug in head set. I bought mine online and emailed VM and they sent me a new phone. I NEVER plug anything in to it anymore. I got a bluetooth ear piece that has an adapter to plug the headset jack into. Shouldn't have to do that for a $300 phone (luckily I didn't pay that much) but I am not wanting to deal with it again. I always thought Motorola was a good phone, but their quality is awful. Won't make this mistake again.

Moto didn't make this phone. I'm guessing VM contracted moto to rebrand this phone for them to their specs. But ultimately, it's literally a rebrand of a cheap chinese phone.

It would be unfair to judge moto based on this phone.

Actually, I think it is perfectly fair. If they didn't build it, fine. Apple doesn't make the Retina Display for the iPad (Samsung, Sharp, and LG do. LG hasn't passed Apple's requirements, as of yet, which means it doesn't get the Apple name!) If you were dumb enough to put your name on a POS, then guess what, you can deal with our complaints. (You meaning Motorola.)

Hey, I've had plenty of Moto devices, I know that they make good phones. That is the reason I bought this one, and the fact they rebranded a POS (not the fact they rebranded) is just down right wrong. Sadly, this will probably be the last Moto product I buy.

To the OP, I am sorry you are having this issue. I would recommend you talk to VM and get a new phone. (Hopefully you are.) Thanks for the advice. :) (Hurry up HTC One V! I am ready to turn this puppy in!)

Sorry to hear you had the same problem, glad you got it worked out.

When you say they sent you a new phone, do you mean they send it to you first then you send the bad one back? My phone is like another limb to me, so being without it would really suck.

Also, do they have a full one year warranty on them? I thought VM didn't do warranty replacements, I thought you had to go through the manufacturer?

And I try to use bluetooth, but it's just so easy to plug into the aux jack in my car. Maybe I'll look into bluetooth in my car with a new phone.

Thanks!

VM replaced mine. They sent the new one and I has 14 days to send the old one in.

Ah, thanks.

I just called them. The first tech said my phone's warranty was up in January of this year. I asked him how could that be when the phone's manufacture date is 6/11 and the phone didn't come out until July.

Then after I hung up angry I realized that the Optimus V came out in June (officially Feb 1st, but I got one early at Target) so they still had that phone listed on my account even though my wife now uses it.

So I called back and got that squared away. But now they want me to factory restore my phone to ensure it's not a software glitch. I stretched the truth and said I already did it twice, but the tech said he didn't see any evidence of that on my account. I'm not sure if he was lying as well, or if they can actually see when you do a restore.

So now I have to go back to the stock ROM, do the restore and call them back. Or maybe I'll just call back and get a different tech that will just send me my damned replacement. *sigh*.

It won't hurt to do what they asked, then you don't have to lie about anything.

Yeah, I know. But with all of my years as a computer tech, I've gotten very jaded having to jump through all of the hoops to get warranty parts ordered.

I'm working on backing everything up as we speak.

I posted some questions here:

Perhaps you know the answers to them?

Thanks again.

Answered them. :)

I just try to do what they ask even though it doesn't help and I already know that. I had a person like that the first time I called that wanted me to pull out the battery, but I was using the phone to call them. He said that I had to do that and call back (what a moron). So I called back on my wife's phone and the person I talked to just got me a replacement without jumping through hoops. Just call again and see what they say.

They sent me a new in the box phone. I kept the battery and cables and sent my old phone back without the battery...the return instructions said return the phone with no battery. I got mine replaced with 2 emails...I emailed, said hey I can't talk on my phone very easily because of this and I bought it from your (VM) Website on 12-1-11. They emailed back said ok, where do we send the replacement. I emailed them my work address late on a Thursday and Monday afternoon the new phone showed up.

Thanks for the heads up about the email option, maybe I'll try this if I need to.

However, I'm starting to think maybe I was wrong and it's not a hardware issue. I think I had too much stuff going on when I disconnected the headset. I had a program called Hearing Saver that changed the media volume when you plug/unplug, as well as Poweramp starting and stopping music plus changing the lockscreen.

I disabled the Hearing Saver app and now the problem SEEMS to have gone away. Guess I should have listened to the support agent and did a restore :)
