watch movies on ascend?

I've asked this question a few times and have yet to get an answer. Why would you want to watch movies on a 3.5" screen?

A lot of reasons. I have a 2 yr old who loves baby einstein.. so at the Drs office or a restaurant its nice to have that ability. Also, i have a lot of window time and standby time at my job.. so its nice to be able to youtube something to occupy time that would otherwise be spent staring at the floor.

There are plenty of reasons..

Is youtube working?

That answers the question about wanting to watch videos. My query is about watching them on such a small screen. I could see the appeal on a bigger screen like on a Motorola Droid or Thunderbolt but I've watched Youtube videos on the Ascend and I find the screen too small to really enjoy them.

Well to each their own my friend. I find it to be sufficient for me. And its not too bulky in my pocket.

Personally I don't mind the small screen to watch videos (web, movies, etc.) since I've watched videos on my old iPod with no problem (of course, I sold it to a family member once I got the Ascend, as I no longer needed it)

Well, regardless of whether we like to watch videos on our phones or not, can we help this lady figure it out? I guess she would have to get a program on her computer to convert her movies to mp4? I've never done this, so does anybody have any ideas?

Personally I like TV.com (The name of the app). This app has quite a few shows and a full few episodes. If you are just looking for basic videos you might watch, There is youtube. Also you can get Skyfire if you are going to a site that will require flash. Though not all flash sites work with Skyfire. ^^.

You could definitely convert video to play on the phone I could give you ways but I don't think that you are asking how to rip and/or convert your baby einstein dvd's? If you do want to do that I will look for the proper encoding settings. It's a bit time consuming.

Yup sure is, I think one of the programs I used to do that was Handbrake, yup it was lol. Heres the link to its download page:

HandBrake

I've watched, and downloaded movies like inception, and machete to my phone. Video was pretty good, with very little choppiness on some parts. I used a program called format factory to shrink the video to a format called 3gp, it won't take up a lot of space, and plays good. My real problem with the ascend is the weak sound

I'm new to the forum but I've got plenty of movies on my Ascend using Handbrake. I went from 480x320 to 640x480 in h.264 format and it looks great.

I find it convinient for when you are really bored, and do not have a computer nearby.

Or, here's a good example. I was doing some work on my girlfriends truck and she wanted to help. She didn't quite understand what we were doing even after I explained it to her.

I pulled up a how-to video on Youtube showing how the job is done step-by-step, and she understood it from there once she saw how everything went together and came apart. Made the job so much easier/faster having 2 people, instead of doing it by myself. The major benifit is that she learned something new, and using Youtube on the phone helped teach her.

I have a coworker who has a samsung intercept, with a 3.2 screen, thats small! The ascend isn't all that bad, if you want a bigger screen, get verizon, att, etc.. pay that extra per year for bragging rights! This phone is so malleable, that with the roms built for it, I think it's like having a cheaper nexus one.

The screen is 480x320 on the Ascend so encoding at a higher resolution will not make it look any better. If anything it may introduce compression artifacts if you don't use a high enough bitrate but if you do that then you risk choppy video playback during "high action" scenes.

If you really are going to encode just for this phone then you should do so at 480x320

I posted some trailers I converted to that format. See the thread:

I see I have a native pittsburger, do u have a steeler wallpaper? Mine has james harrison kneeling on one knee with his arms stretched out, and ben giving him a pump. ur trailers look great!

i thought if you watched movies it would use up alot of your gprs causing your phone to slow down on your network? because cricket only allows you to get up to 1GB and then they will slow your network down tremendously.
