Help Water damage help

K17Jester

Lurker
Rather stupidly i dropped my HTC Desire into a bucket of water this afternoon and immediately took the battery out and put it on the radiator to dry. Tried turning it on... no luck.
Plugged charger in and the white reboot screen came up, pressed reboot and the phone started vibrating for at least 2 minutes got worried so took the battery out to stop it. Is that normal for rebooting?

Just heard about the rice trick so have popped it in a bag of rice to draw out any remaining water. Hopefully it will help but if anyone has any advice as to how i can help sort this problem or know if it can be fixed please let me know

Thanks

The rice trick is the only thing you can do really. Don't be impatient - turning it on with moisture still present won't help the phone.

The trouble is that water is very corrosive for electronics. I'm afraid that continuous vibration is very much not normal. Hopefully it won't do that again, but you'll be very lucky if you don't have more problems down the line, and there's not much can be done with moisture damage. Just got to hope that the rice does the trick.

Thank you, im praying that it will work as it is only a couple of months old and while second hand was in brand new condition.
Will any phone shop be able to fix it if it doesnt improve and will it be expensive?
Thanks again

The problem is that water damage is insidious. A shop might try to fix a specific problem for you (I've no idea of costs), but that need not be the end of it. And it depends on what fails - corrosion on the motherboard would be beyond a shop's capabilities. So I think it's mainly a matter of crossing fingers.

Thank you so much, I have my fingers and toes crossed that it will be okay as really dont have the money to buy another one. In the meantime i have a phone to be getting on with which will do until it hopefully works again

Well if there's a problem I doubt it can hurt much to ask, provided it's someone you trust to give an honest assessment and not rip you off. HTC won't touch it once moisture's involved, I'm afraid.

I second Hadron's advice not to be impatient! I am afraid that a dunking that complete most likely fried the circuitry.

If you do get your phone working again, backup everything you can get your digital hands on right away. It may be too late awfully fast...
