Help Water Damage

Hey guys,
New to the forum... hi!
I have a HTC Desire, about 8 months old... love it! However... couple of days ago I managed to drop it into my chai latte :S still not entirely sure HOW I managed this but anyway. So after having a minor melt down I got to drying it out...
Amazingly the phone seems to be working fine, just the screen is playing up. The screen wasn't too bad to start with, just a bit flickery, and the light kept turning off but stayed on if you kept fiddling/touching it... however during the day it stopped working. While the screen was attempting to work this morning I made calls and everything seemed fine in terms of the touch screen was working. I can still answer calls atm, by just dragging down, but the screen won't light up.
So... should I try replacing the screen with something off ebay? How do I know if it's the screen or the backing light etc (I don't know much about this stuff)
I'm still paying the phone off on a plan so wanna try fixing it before looking at buying a new one :S and at a minimal cost lol.
Thanks guys!

hi there, im told under good authority, that if you get a phone wet, then take the battery out straight away, and put the phone with the back off, and the battery under uncooked rice, and this will help to draw out the moisture.

As if you leave it on you can damage your phone maybe there is still moisture in yours so try the rice thing for a couple of days.

or sadly...maybe its broken a bit :-(

Thanks for the replies guys :)
I had heard about the rice thing, it's been in a container with rice for about 2 days now... would it need longer?

cant hurt to leave it in another day if you can bare it, that been said if you had intermittant problems with it before hand then i may sadly just be generally dead.

i guess replacing the lcd could be an option, i once replaced mine with one from ebay and it wasnt too difficult and worked a treat.

it was a nokia 5800 though, and i dont know if your phone is as easy to change.

Yeah I think I will try the new screen, and if that doesn't work I'll look into a new phone :(
Next question... how do I know which screen is compatible? One of the listings on ebay says there's a samsung and sony version?

I checked on the box and it seems I have an SLCD screen... however this is my second Desire (first one had battery problems, luckily in the first 30 days so I got an entirely new phone) and when I got the new one I didn't get the box with it, so this is the original phone's box... is there any way of telling other than on the box?

Well if your first was SLCD, it must have been produced after they ran out of AMOLED screens so would assume the replacement too was SLCD but cannot be sure.

The only way to tell is to put a dark image on the screen and see in a dark room if you can see light bleeding from around the edges of the screen, but not sure if this is possible in the state your phone is in.

Not sure if there is a model number printed on the component itself somewhere that you can tell from... Imagine there is but again, not sure.
