Water damaged desire.. SIM / SD reader not working

fintanj

My wife dropped her desire in the toilet and unsurprisingly its not working. The battery and phone moisture indicators have both been triggered. When I replace her battery with mine the phone powered up, but got stuck at the initial HTC logo screen. I then did a recovery and got to the point where the phone powers on and is usable. The Wifi, speaker and screen all work however the neither the SIM or SD card can be detected.

Any thoughts on how I determine if this is a hardware problem or a software problem?

I have also found this....

HTC Replacement Repair SIM card tray & SIM card reader

Which could work. Has anyone ever replaced this part before?

She did the "rice in a bag trick" and left it on top of a radiator for a few days so yep.. i think its properly dried out...

No idea, if everything else works I can't think of any reason why the sim/SD wouldn't. Unless there's still a little moisture in there?

I'll remove the battery holder and leave it somewhere warm for a while. I'm sure it can't hurt...
Don't suppose you've come across some where in Belfast that could replace the the SIM tray / SD reader?

CPW do phone repairs, had a search on google there but can't see too many options. You may have to send it off somewhere. Let us know how you get on!

I jumped out of a boat into the Sea with my desire in my pocket.

It was dead and after about a week in rice it was still dead. When i phoned tech support they said that if the Desire is turned on when submerged in water it dies instantly since the inside shorts out and fries the processor.

This i guess just goes to show that HTC tech dont know everything.

Dropped my Desire in the toilet over new years, at first it wouldnt turn on and was doing heaps of funky things. After a day of drying it out, everything worked fine but had lost all my settings (accounts etc), and the screen had water damage.
Is being repaired for that now, surprised how resilient to water it was..

Thanks czechplastik,

I removed the battery housing and placed it on a radiator over a cloth and left it for 2 days. The SD card reader now works however the SIM reader does not pick up the SIM. I get a "No SIM in phone message". Any thoughts?

How's that?

Salt water is about the worst thing to put powered electronics into.

Freshwater conducts electricity pretty well on its own (including shorting out the electronic components), but saltwater is on a whole other level...

I fell in a river with mine back in Oct. Being an idiot, and drunk at the time, I tried to switch it back on straight away. Needless to say it wouldn't boot up and just got stuck on the revolving circle. I dismantled it and went to sleep, in the morning it booted up but vibrated constantly. It kept the vibrating up for a week, but since then has worked just fine.

So it was shaking due to cold water, right? :-)
