Way to change notifications?

Is there anyway to change the notifications so that when I receieve a text it will popup on the screen when the phone is locked? Right now all it does it vibrate/ring and blinks the red light at the top right.
 
Try Handcent SMS from the market. It can pop up messages over the lock screen, and gives you a range of options for how and when. The native SMS app cannot do this.
 
As well as what you've mentioned the trackball should stay illimunated while you have a message waiting. If you press the hangup/power off button once (so it shows you the slide down to unlock screen) you will see at the very bottom a preview of the text you have and the sender. It only shows the most recent text so if you have 10 message you will only see preview of the last one sent to you.
I find it very useful
