We Want ICS!

Well, we may not have to worry as to wether or not VM gives up ICS... There seems to be a big breakthrough regarding ICS on the dev thread here (been following it very closely). Thanks to all that have been working very hard to make it a reality... I'm so excited, I nearly peed.... lol.

I'm tempted to Write them and tell them that I'm going to a different network, and get a BlackBerry, which has system wide adjustable font sizes, Unless they update my Triumph with ICS, which has the same. For me it's part of the whole accessibility thing. Google has fixed this with iCS, now VMUSA and Motorola should do the same. Also, I shouldn't be forced to root my phone to get this functionality, as that voids my warranty anyway. But I really don't think threatening is the answer, unless it's tactful, like the letter at the beginning of this thread.

you might be upset with the stock rom, thats normal.

and no you "should not" HAVE to root and rom to gain functionality that should be there stock.

but on the other hand, you could fix your problem TONIGHT by flashing CM7. it has system wide adjustable font sizes. its the only other option rather than waiting for VM to do something.

I use that feature too, even old phones like the Sidekick had it from the beginning

I'll think about this, but I'm not the most technical person, But I need to research the risks, and see if this can be done using a Mac as the host computer. What's the largest font system wide font size you've gotten with this? And should I want to use it, will Pico TTS still run under CM7? I use Pico for apps like the vOICe (augmented reality for the blind), SpeakToIt Assistant, and Jeanie. I guess if I bricked the phone I could always pull out my old BB Curve or Intercept. I'd feel bad though, $300 was a lot to pay for the Triumph, and just 'cause I don't like some things, it does have its' advantages.

its hard to brick the triumph following the How-To

the triumph is much, MUCH easier to rom than most other phones.

i dont know if it will work on a mac, but you just boot into download mode, swap the recovery for CWM recovery, then boot into that and flash the rom from the sd card to phone storage. then boot into the rom and set it up (sign into accounts, download apps, change settings)

no ADB commands or anything that is needed on most other phones.

I did see the video on installing CM7 on Triumphhacks.com, but I'm also looking for written instructions on the steps to take. All looks promising, even if I'm fearful of hurting the phone. I think I saw in that video one shot were the fonts were enlarged. that looked cool too. but I still have the above questions in my last reply.

Yeah ok. I wondered, because rooting the old Intercept would've required putting the phone into debug mode and using a CLI on the host. This is really nice. I *may* try and hire someone come over and read the bootloader screen, as it looked like the menus were quite small, but they are white on black text. As for getting the files on the SD card. the Triumph mounts as a usb drive on the mac, but even easier still is just remove the sdcard, put into an adapter, then mount that in the sdcard slot on my Macbook. I could probably do this by myself, by using my handheld magnifier to read the bootloader menus. Word's still out on it messing up pico text to speech. I've written the eyes-free email list about that. if that passes I'm good to go! By the way, you never did mention what the largest font size you got when adjusting. Thanks again. :D

CM7 is stock android Gingerbread (2.3.7) with a bunch of added options and features.

anything thats a feature of android will work, so pico TTS should as well

and i think the guides here on THIS forum are more up to date, and the cm7 roms are more up to date.

Motorola/VMUSA will not upgrade MT to ICS.

VMUSA wants you to buy a new phone with ICS on it. This is how they make money off of these phones. If they upgrade then phone sales will drop.

I've noticed more sales on VMUSA phones so that means the sales numbers are dropping. Expect new phones with ICS before the year is out. ;)

For natural sounding text-to-speech I would recommend the SVOX voices. I find they work really well in Google Nav, but also the Bible program I use, Tecarta KJV Bible. I would think these voices would work well in other eReader applications that are voice-enabled... I use SVOX's US Gracie.

More like they might once a new android version is out and ICS is obsolete... I mean they just started selling phones with gingerbread.

Yeah, I'm considering those voices, but I'm going to try pico first as it's free, and I like the pico UK voice.

For all the people on here saying we're not in the position to demand anything, you're wrong. All we have to do is say if you won't update our phones, we'll cancel our service. That's what I'm emailing them right now. I don't think a company like VM would want to lose customers.

Really? Would you be willing to cancel your $35 or even better (like me) $25 plan? Where is there a better deal for those using less than 300 minutes a month? I have no reason to ever drop my VM plan unless I just really want a different phone.

I know it sucks, but it's the market that we have to live with. There just isn't a ton of true competition in the market. However, things are looking up. As the prepaid market continues to expand, prices are going down and phone price competition is becoming more direct with the lack of subsidies. Since we are hitting a technological plateau or smartphones (or at least in what people need/want), that competition get more direct and parody will increase.

I honestly used to think it would take intervention from the FCC to fix things in the wireless industry, but it appears they are beginning to get better for the consumer on their own. The best thing we can do for this is support the prepaid industry. Consequently, don't cancel your plan or at least if you do switch to another prepaid carrier.

Im ordering a replacement Phone when ever something screws up. Yesterday i called them because my screen went nuts for no reason and they told me i had 1 year replacement warrenty ( didnt know) and just how i did with my mytouch im gonna get another one when ever i please or find a reason to !! i think i got maybe 10 different ones from t mobile. Referbished but who cares! Working and better then the boxed origial one.
We cant force them to give us ics but we can complain and bitch,
ugh speaking to the vm representative yesterday was like talking to a blonde with D cups WOW airhead.
What is a class A replacement phone?
She couldnt telll me IDK was her answer

I understand. From the testing I've done, there was no comparison in the TTS quality from either the built-in or Pico and SVOX. You can't go wrong for a few dollars US to get one of the SVOX voices IMHO.

I do retain at least a little hope that they will update.
I mean the Intercept came with (I think) 2.1, and it's at 2.2 now. The OV is going to get Gingerbread sometime around the middle of this year, if Wikipedia is to be believed. So maybe VM will see the point in upgrading their highest-end phone.

Although, if Motorola was this lazy with 2.2, a part of me says that if they do put out 2.3 not to expect much in the way of optimization and bugfixes.

I kinda doubt the OV will get GB all though it would be cool. Another thing is VM has to approve the MT getting GB or ICS so it has to be both VM and Motorola who want to upgrade.

Ayy I just did it (changed working to kindly request), its worth a try, if more people complain then maybe we will be added to the list of upgrade to ICS :)

Sent lots of complaint email and also did a live chat with Motorola advisor and here is what they had to say:
Donna: Hi, my name is Donna. How may I help you?

Me: Hi my name is ***** Motorola release a list of android cellphones getting the update but the Triumph was left off the list? I just want to know if the Virgin Mobile Motorola Triumph people are ever going to get an update to ice cream sandwich 4.0?

Donna: As previously communicated, DROID RAZR, DROID RAZR MAXX, DROID 4, DROID BIONIC, DROID XYBOARD 8.2 and 10.1, and MOTOROLA XOOM WiFI + 3G/4G will be upgraded to ICS. Additional details on timing for these products will be shared at a later date.

Here is another response I received from Virgin Mobile

Hi! I've been trolling the forums for awhile but this is my first time posting :) I just send this message to Virgin Mobile:

Hi! I've had the Optimus V since it was released, and really would like to upgrade my phone. I would love to just jump to the Motorola Triumph, but it seems to be plagued with problems. I am looking for some straight forward questions, no "We don't have that information" or "We'll let you know on our website!" kind of non-answers. Firstly, when is there going to be an update for the Motorola Triumph? You keep saying it's up to Motorola, and Motorola keeps saying it's up to you. Sounds like you both need to have a chat and make up your mind. Secondly, if there isn't going to be an update, would you be able to tell me what phones will be released soon? I hope it's not just those rumored 600mhz ZTE phones..

Also, please do not tell me you're not in the correct department. If that is the case, please contact someone in the correct department, forward them this message, and have them reply.

I'm sorry if this message sounds brash or harsh, it just seems like Virgin Mobile has been giving us customers the run around for quite a few months about these issues.

Thank you.

---
I'll let you know as soon as I get a reply. Just thought I'd share. I really would love to get the Triumph, but short of rooting, it seems destined to fail.
