If you put security on your phone by either a passcode or pattern lock and try too many incorrect logins, you need to unlock your phone with the credentials for the gmail account the phone is registered to.
Be advised that phone data must be on either from 3G or Wifi at the time so the phone can authenticate with Google's servers to verify you are the owner, otherwise it may fail. If you have internet access on the phone and simply don't recall the password you can go here to reset it : https://www.google.com/accounts/recovery?service=mail
If that doesn't work, you'll need to perform a factory reset.
