Help Weird battery behaviour

I'm seeing some pretty random battery behaviour.

The first is related to Google Play, I think this is a known issue with 4.2, but my phone gets really hot and the battery loses a % every minute or 2 in sleep and the culprit is Google Play. A force stop of Google Play usually resolves the issue, but it's happening at least once a day.

The second issue happened this morning. The phone was in airplane mode overnight and didn't drop a % (25%). I turned on wi-fi, and did some browsing. In under 5 mins the battery was down to 7%. It eventually died 10 mins later. I then charged it over USB from my PC (normally a slower charge than from the mains), and it was up to 17% in about 3 mins. That's just not right.

Anyone else seeing this behaviour?

Running stock 4.2.1 with Nova Launcher.

A factory reset should do the trick if you're comfortable backing up your data. A custom kernel can also do wonders to reduce the heat this phone puts off. Personally i'd recommend Franco's kernel. My phone runs much cooler than it used to on stock.

If you don't want to do any of that.. Get a battery monitoring program and figure out what's messing with your phone.

How new is your phone?

The reason I ask is I'm stock with Nova launcher. I've had the phone almost a month and have no heat or battery issues.

It's pretty important to run full cycle charges for about the first week you have your Nexus. Meaning charge it all the way up and let it run almost all the way down. This "breaks in" the battery. After using my phone for a month I can tell you I get more life and more screen on time than I did when it was new. Hope this helps.

"Lithium-ion is a very clean system and does not need formatting when new, nor does it require the level of maintenance that nickel-based batteries do. The first charge is no different than the fifth or the 50th. Formatting makes little difference because the maximum capacity is available right from the beginning. Neat article. However in terms of real world usage N4 owners have seen their batteries get "better" over time. Meaning more screen on(I get around 5-6 hours now as opposed to 3-4 when new) Can you explain that doctor? I guess my battery must be really smart

Correlation is not causation.

Anecdotal "evidence" is not accepted until reproducible under strict conditions of experiment and is peer reviewed.

In other words, just because you think x led to y does not mean that it did, and the professional consensus seems to be against you.

But, whatever, I'm not going to get into a shouting match with you, it's not worth my time.

Just to play devil's advocate, your not taking the software into account. Sure, the battery might be only capable of pumping out the same juice, but if the software adapts to the behaviour of a battery then they could well be seeing longer "battery life".

Perhaps. Can you provide any articles that might bear this out?

I'm happy to be proven wrong if the outcome is useful to everyone.
