Are you sure you are looking at the contact list and not the "dialer" screen. your contacts and calls are intermingled on the "dialer" screen.
When you long press on the "unknown call" it would give you the option to "delete contact" if it was in your contact list. Will give you the option to add as a contact otherwise.
