Help Weird weather screen problem

As per updated subject, I have seen this issue on multiple HTC android phones and have seen this issue posted on multple forums across the internet.

A factory reset always fixes this issue (at least for me), therefore I figured this is some database corruption that causes the weather for the current location not to show up anymore.

I tried the following on my HTC Desire:
Go to "Main menu->Settings-Applications->Manage applications".
Then, locate the entry "HTC weather sync provider" and tap on it.
Finally tap on "Clear Data".

Go back to idle screen and manually update the weather and hey presto, it is working again for the current location.

I hope it works also for you guys having this issue.

NOTE: This proves that it is a HTC weather widget bug, definitely. Nothing to do with the operator, bla bla bla.

@mrfrank - OK I followed your instructions and cleared the 8KB that was under "HTC weather sync provider" but sadly to no avail. I also tried removing the widget, clearing it and re-adding the widget - still no change.

When going to Google in the web browser it also shows my location as 'Juniper Green' rather than 'Edinburgh', so at least in my case there seems to be an issue with how the location is being reported (although in Maps, etc. it all works fine).

Overall - still no luck :-( As an aside it also seems a bit weird that you need to remove and re-add the widget just to change the location that's displayer - don't know why that's not just an option in the settings menu for weather.

Sorry it did not work for you.
It looks like there may be more root causes for the same issue for different people.
In my case google homepage shows the same location as the clock and weather widgets.

And does the location make sense? (i.e. major town/city as opposed to random nearby place that you wouldn't expect there to be a weather report for as mine does!). Thanks anyway though - was certainly worth a short! FWIW I've also dropped HTC a support request and highlighted this thread.

It does show the "area" (the area is about 1-2 miles radius), but not the accurate location at my home. It does show the weather report of the "area" anyway. But that may be because I leave in a London council and therefore, there is no clear town/city location id.
However, at my work place it shows a finer location, down to the town level.
To be honest, the location must depend to how Google servers report it for a given country/place. I assume that HTC weather is in fact using Google location updates.

If HTC weather used the cell ID from the operator cellular towers then you would have a more accurate location. Google servers may not get it always right, depending on how they detect the location.
 
Yep, agreed - I wonder if there's two problems, one the issue with looking up the weather properly (which the cache clear seems to perhaps help with) and the other being how the location is being reported and it not properly translating between finer locations and the broader ones needed for pulling down a weather report.

I gave a different try.
Go to "Main menu->Settings-Applications->Manage applications".
Then, locate the entry "Weather provider" and tap on it. Note, this is different from my previous post.
Finally tap on "Clear Data".
After doing this, you wil lose all saved locations within the weather application, including the current location.
As a consequence, the clock widget wil not show any location anymore either.
I then manualy added one location and it worked fine for that location. But then, you need to soft reset (restart) the phone to get the current location back.

Maybe this wil trigger a fix also for you. Worth another try. ;)
 
OK, have now tried that too - it definitely cleared all the locations, but when I went to re-add them I picked 'current location' (no soft reset seemed to be needed to get this to appear) and was right back to 'Juniper Green' and 'No weather data available' :(

Well, you need a soft reset to get curent location to appear in the weather app, otherwise the clock widget will not pick it up correctly.

Have you tried a soft reset as well?

I am also from Cambridge, also have this problem and just added it manually, however, I then wondered why the weather was nothing like what I saw out of the window...

Just make sure you have Cambridge UK, not MA USA!

I know I am a numpty:-)
 
I have elected to use WeatherBug's widget instead, it works based on my current location properly. I pair this along with a smaller version of HTC's clock widget (it gets the time right for my current location, thankfully) and get the same information I need.
 
I have exactly the same issue here in Leicester. Managed to add it as another selection and the weather displays fine (but it's no.2 in the list after the default which shows no data). Tried MrFrank's advice of clearing the data which at least got the default to the top of the list, but still won't show on the homescreen.

Just hope a bug fixed version of the app is released in the near future.

Some phone features such as Weather and Footprints require Google’s location service to automatically determine your current location. On the Location consent screen, you can choose whether to allow

Google’s location service to collect information about your location. Clear or select the checkbox, and then tap Next.
This service may incur additional data transfer fees from your provider. You can enable or disable this service later in your phone’s location settings.
 
Hi I live in Bedford and no problem with the weather update - always there - BUT have just spent the weekend in Portsmouth and has no weather, back home now and OK. Must be the sea air??

Alan, mine is fine at work (Ingliston) but doesn't work at home (City Centre), maybe different phone masts give different levels of information, or maybe being in range of more than one mast confuses it.
 
Exactly what I had to do, I assume this is some sort of bug with the app.

Yep. I've put it down to being a bug with the app as well, as the original "Luton" location on mine still has no weather data or pictures. The one I added manually has and it works on the home screen.
 
The original post was about Portsmouth in the UK and I can confirm that this problem is a location specific issue. I have 3 desires 2 with orange and 1 with t-mobile all have same issue move outside of Portsmouth to havant or fareham for example and it works.

Annoying as hell that a large city has no data yet all the smaller towns do which smacks of a bug. In this instance I do not think we cannot fix the problem. I also do not believe it is mast related issue as two network so this is something else. Current locations it is the data that is not pulled into the widget.

Possible but surely that would mean we would be flooded with the type of issue as seen in Portsmouth. I think it more likely a problem with the app itself. I did wonder if the database was getting confused between Portsmouth US and Portsmouth UK but that feels like clutching at straws.
