can anyone point me in the direction of "first grade" android programming?
i took a few classes in C back in high school so i have the basic concepts of loops and functions etc.. but no OOP or anything of the like

ZOMG!!! Questions in the intro forum! Heresy! :p

No one will get upset if you ask questions here, don't worry about it.

If you ever need assistance and aren't sure where to post, feel free to drop me, or any of the other Guides (the guys with green usernames, there's a list of us on this page) a PM. To be fair, A LOT of the other guides are jerks, but there are a few good apples in there so you might get lucky. Seriously though, we'll all be happy to help and if we don't have the answer ourselves, we'll certainly be able to point you in the right direction.

To answer your question, we've a developers section hiding down the bottom of the main page, you might want to check out some of the stickies in there and the subforums it contains, they should contain some pretty good info.

Application Development - Android Forums

That section is a bit too clever for my liking so that's pretty much all the advice I can give you, sorry. :o
