Root Welcome to Jelly Bean - Rooting

Anyone have a problem when downloading Odin, setting off their antivirus? Mine said it was low grade trojan.

Well, we all know for a fact that Odin is safe. I'd just get rid of that anti virus. Especially if you are using Win7. Buddy, I can personally attest to the fact that Norton and Win7 are TERRIBLE combination. Hell, I once watched with my own eyes as a Norton conflict destroyed my buddy's laptop. We had to totally wipe the HDD and install Linux.

Use Windows Security Essentials. Least invasive thing you can get.

Norton is awful for any PC. Win7 isn't always friendly with Odin, too. I had to use my old XP rig.

bkttk2 I'm 15 and just got the reverb about 6 months ago. I'm trying to root it because i heard you can speed up a phone if you root it, and my phone acts real slow sometimes. What i need help on is, do i download the files to my phone or onto my laptop?? Please help!! Anyone?!!

Another thing, can I root my phone with a laptop that doesn't have internet? I have the phone, USB cable, laptop, but no internet on my laptop.

Hi, just follow the directions in the first post exactly. The individual steps tell you which files need to go where.

It will stay that way until you're done using Odin, it's just telling you it's in download mode.
It's not actually downloading anything until you give it something to download, which is what Odin does.

when i get to the recovery stage, i still go to the regular factory recover, i dont get the cwm recovery.... HELP!!!!!!

When i get to recovery, the words pop-up in the left hand corner, but nothing happens, it comes up for a split second and then goes blank.

The way I get it to work, as soon as you see those words in the corner, let go of the buttons.
If you are rooted already, using an app such as Power Menu makes it a whole lot easier, though

Im not rooted yet, im trying to tho. I used Odin, unplugged it, and went to recovery. it went to the regular recovery page, so i couldn't flash SuperUser or BusyBox

Easiest way to avoid it reflashing its own stock recovery is to pull the battery right after Odin is done, and make sure auto-reboot is unchecked in Odin.

i did all that. but still, nothing happened. do i use the .tar version, or the .zip version of the cwmt????
Tar file for flashing with Odin: cwmt-iconvmu-mirage_090813.tar
Zip file for flashing in recovery: cwmt-iconvmu-mirage_090813.zip

The tar file is the one for Odin. Not sure about the usb cable, I've never had any issues with mine.

When Odin is done, are you letting your phone finish installing - what I mean is, are you letting the little bar on your phone screen fill up and your phone to say it's done before pulling the battery?

Actually, I haven't noticed that little bar. I'm gonna have to try it again and see if there's a little bar. Where is it supposed to be located on the screen.?

**As with any guidance provided you assume all risk using the information. You always run the risk of bricking your phone. All information provided by myself and the below forum members is given as guidance only.**

If you are wanting to return to ICS stock please see second post.

Following, which is similar to info posted by tyler1998 should allow all to root:

This is not fully my work but is guidance obtained from comments by ShabbyPenguin in the Galaxy Rush forum and communications with xInterlopeRx.

You will need:

Odin

Samsung drivers

Reverb Clockworkmod Recovery CWMT-6.0.3.6 for JB

SuperUser

BusyBox

Once you have obtained the above files and the OTA Jelly Bean Update procede with the following steps.

1. Install the Samsung drivers
2. Install Odin
2. Plug in the phone and wait for the drivers to finish installing
3. Place the SU zip and Busybox zip files on your sd-card
4. Power off the device.
5. Put the device in Download mode by pressing VOL-DN then Power. Hold until a choice menu appears
6. Push volume up to chose Download Mode
7. Fire up Odin.
8. Chose the recovery .tar file using the PDA slot option
9. Uncheck "Auto-Reboot"
10. Chose "Start"
11. When Odin is done, unplug the phone.
12. Remove the battery
13. Replace the battery
14. Press Vol-Up then Power until the words "Booting into recovery" appear in the upper left corner
15. You should now have the CWM recovery installed

Note if you are unable to access the CWM recovery or reboot prior to battery pull you will need to start over again. The auto-reboot places stock recovery.

16. In recovery select flash install zip from sdcard
17. Select busybox zip file then when that is complete select SU zip file
18. Once completed reboot phone.

You should now have root.

Major thanks to xInterlopeRx!! He has helped a lot with this phone and he does not even own it.

Also want to thank mrg666 for working to provide a universal custom recover!!

Thank you so much!! My phone is faster already. What apps do you recommend I download?

Well, he does own one...technically

Yea, after a couple tries I got it to root. Its so much faster with JB. I'm about to check out these apps. Thanks so much again!!

Oh I should mention that AdAway isn't on the Play store anymore since Google wants to show their ads, but you can get it here-

https://f-droid.org/repository/browse/?fdid=org.adaway

Also somewhere around here there are a couple of lists of system apps / bloatware that is safe to remove.

Mrg666's custom kernel also helps a lot with speed on this phone and should allow you to overclock with No-frills if you choose to.
And Power Menu makes it a while lot easier to boot into recovery out download mode.
