Root Well it's broke... help?

Newbie
I figured I'd go the root and Froyo route today.

Started out with this guide:
[WALKTHROUGHS 3/9/11] Rooting, Clockwork, Voodoo, Froyo and Custom ROMs, Battery, etc - xda-developers

Everything went fine until I got to the Clockwork for new users (post 3).

That whole section seems half baked, as 1st getting the phone into download mode is wrong, figured that out and managed to flash the linked Tar via Odin, that went fine.

Starting at step #7 I got confused as I had no update.zip included... ended up finding this page -> Clockworkmod installation how to for windows / *nix - xda-developers

Basically stating the update.zip was optional, so I went into ROM Manager and hit the "install clockwork mod" button, which completed. Then I went down to the Backup button and hit that. Phone rebooted and came up with a red lettered list (of steps it had planned to take) below that it said it was starting and that one log had been made into a different error log. Couldn't get it to do anything, so I rebooted the phone finally.

Got back into the regular OS, found an update.zip from here:
How to Escape the Force Close Loop of Hell - Android Forums which was suggested in the end of the original thread since the links are dead.

Stuck that in the root of the SD card, went back to Root Manager, hit backup again.... and now the phone will only display the Samsung logo indefinitely on boot.

In most cases have to remove the battery to get it to shut off.
I can get it to show the battery charging icon if the cable is plugged in, but that's about it.

Help?

I did all the backups I could before starting this, so I'm not concerned with data loss.

Well I'm following the androidcentral version of that thread, slightly newer, but I've got it loading SC2.9 right now... still seeing if she'll boot completely, but it's looking more positive than it was 20 minutes ago.

Had to use another fascinate to replace the bogus update.zip on the SD card, then do the SC2.9 install via odin.

It's working again.

WiFi doesn't seem to want to connect at all. It can see and try to connect to my AP, but it just cycles connecting, disconnected with dynamic or a static IP. Even my Wifi measuring app won't find anything at all now.

Other than the battery getting plenty hot during some gameplay, the wifi issue, and some app things I'll have to fix... so far I've noticed improved file handling/installs, and some of the UI changes are interesting.
