What Android phone?

Noobster

Newbie
I'm planning to get my first smartphone and it will be an Android :D

I just can't decide which one to buy, right now i'm leaning towards the Galaxy S a lot.
So what do you guys recommend?
Right now my budget is 500$ and the Galaxy S runs about that or a bit more HERE.
Any other options you guys recommend?

I've been also eyeing lots of HTC's however they are very very uncommon here (In fact i've never seen one in person, just on the web).
Motorola are easier to get. LG's also.
I'm trying to find the best that fits my budget and gives me the best bang for the buck. (Which currently is the Galaxy S)

Wow Bionic xD
That's gonna take at least 6 months to get here (The Galaxy S came like 7 months after the U.S release) unless i import it which will not happen :)

For the best support, get an HTC phone, like Incredible S or Deisre S.
Samsung Galaxy S is from last year and has a terrible plastic body. Still can be a good choice.
Motorola is dead internationally, and I'm not sure if they have a future.

It is a matter of personal taste, the phones in the range are pretty much the same give or take few small features.
I recommend you find someone with a Galaxy S or go to a shop or something and just try it out, play with it and see if you like it - I bet you will even with the "plastic" body which never seemed to bother me mainly because everyone puts some kinds of protection case so all the phones feel the same.

What country are you in? Samsung does well pretty much everywhere but the US, but as a US Galaxy S user I'll say that I am very happy with my phone.

Nothing wrong with the Galaxy S, still a great phone, if you want one get one, don't let the haters put you off.

That said, the Galaxy S2 is out next month, I'm not sure if it's within your budget but wait for that if you can.

 go with the t-mobile g2x... i have it so far 3 days and its great

Seconded. The G2X is the Galaxy S but with internal memory and a dual core processor. As well as no OS overlay..just vanilla android so it uses less ram. I have played with it at the TMO store and its amazing.

my friends and family have almost every android phone out there and to me having a vanilla android is better

It depends from which perspective we are looking: processing power? UI? price? manufacturer? OS version? battery life? available memory? display?
For each to their preferences...

What kind do you want? Physical keyboard? Dual Core, Big Screen? Do you know the different UI's?

I for one prefer HTC phones because I like the Sense UI, I have an HTC Desire HD but I would recommend the HTC Sensation.

in all honesty, depends on your carrier and what they offer, galaxy s phones are on all carriers, but if your referring to the og i am assuming you are with T-Mo, i hear rumors about the LG optimus g2x galaxy s smartphones are great, but if your going that route, get the nexus s, or wait for the LG so you have the latest and greatest.
if your a rooter, and are looking to root and rom this thing in the new future, here are some things you must consider:

Motorola = Locked and Encrypted Bootloaders, prevents you from doing alot of great things. The og droid was the best phone moto made with android, if they unlock the bootloaders, then their products will continue to outshine the rest

HTC = Full open Android system, some of the best android devices are HTC's, updates come fairly quickly, however the biggest flaw with HTC is in the battery life, it is crippled. hopefully they will soon have a fix for their battery issues. i know the thunderbolt will not last all day on as much use as my droid x gets before it has to be charged from being drained of battery

Samsung = Tricky one here, samsung has alot of issues going around with users since sammy doesnt update their versions of android, and are well know for pushing updates, then cancelling the push. however samsung does have great battery life, nice sturdy phones with super amoled screens, and has the full open android system. but if you like being stuck 1 - 2 versions behind the rest of us and your not a rooter. i would advise rooting to get the latest and greatest (though rooting will void your warranty)

LG = havent heard anything about a single LG phone that was impressive. the LG Ally on verizon was targeted at low end users who wanted an android but couldnt afford the latest and greatest

that is all i can tell you about, considering i have not seen a dell streak yet, or a visio phone released. or an asus. but im sure we will be seeing more and more of them

depending on what you want to do, whether its rooting and roming, or just having a blast with your android.
battery life i recommend = Motorola, Samsung
Full Open Android experience = Samsung, HTC
Updated Android Version = Motorola, HTC
Ease of use = Motorola, HTC, Samsung

so you see each phone has its own pro's and con's its what you decide and you need to go play with each highend phone that is made by these manufacturers.

im not including LG because i have not played with one, but i know LG does have some nice phones

good luck in your decision Noobster

I don't think that's fair at all, the Galaxy S started on 2.1 if it wasn’t for google pulling the latest update, international users would now be on 2.3.3, even some of the US versions are on 2.2.1.

So saying they don't update is complete nonsense, you really should stop telling people this because it's BS.

As for rooting voiding the warranty, that only applies if the handset is rooted when it's returned, I don't think anybody is actually that stupid.

you can buy the g2x for 250 with $50 mail in rebate so it would be 199.99

That's insanely cheap, US?

i have not had a samsung, instead my sister and brother in law have em

i have tried to manually update them, no dice, no such update is avail.

and didnt you read the news on phandroid a month or two back that samsung was holding updates? there is even a video on youtube of a dev making a parody because of it. so it is not nonsense, i gather my information from what i have read and seen. so its not nonsense, hence why i didnt post a thing about LG, because i dont know much about them to make a point. btw its not like my post is in favor of the whole android community, only what i have came across. im sorry if it hurt your feelings, but i will continue to post information that i come across to better help someone else.

thanks

Yes it is BS, most US versions are on 2.2.1, internationial users are on 2.2.1 or 2.3.3 if they updated before it was pulled or did it manually

So your claim that they don't update is nonsense, they clearly do provide updates for the Galaxy S and the US versions.

Feelings have nothing to do with this, your just wrong.

What phone were they using?

Galaxy S phones
Facinate and Captivate

so if you can explain that one, id be glad to know
2 different carriers, almost the same exact phone.
and my buddy has an actual Galaxy S, but he rooted, and romed his so i dont know what version he is on.

I don't need to explain anything, you said they don't update when they clearly do.

Quick look over at xda forums and these phones have updates available, Galaxy S had 2.2.1 last year.

now im almost positive, that the phones now have the correct firmware. but to say samsung doesnt hold the updates, is completely false

have they changed their ways? maybe!
are they holding updates to furthur the sale of a certain device still? maybe!
is samsung the best manufacturer? no! there is no better manufacturer. its all on what users think. samsung makes great products. i give them that, but they do hold updates. and if you want to say im still wrong so be it, i just dont care if you do or dont think im wrong, or speaking nonsense.
if someone wants help on choosing which android device he wants to get, i will put in my opinion, because it is MY opinion.
so have a good one ^_^
