what app is using GPS

I leave the GPS enabled all the time and up till now whatever app needed it (latitude, or the camera geo tagging a photo) would use the service and that'd be it the icon would disappear from the top of the screen till used again.

but today for the last few hours I've noticed that the GPS signal is active the whole time

any ideas on how I can discover which app is using it?

You sure can.... if you download spare parts app. You can go in to the settings on there look at battery history and in there you can mess with settings that will tell you what is using the network the cpu or your gps.
