what app: quickly find a lost friend?

Extreme Android User
hi ...

my sis had car trouble over the weekend.
she needed me to come help and get her.

she has an android phone, but we had trouble trying to understand where she was exactly. Her ability to read map and communicate back to me.

so.. i was wondering.. is there an easy.. simple app. quick and simple.
that 2 people looking to find each others location can use; and hopefully on google maps referenced.
no need to sign up for nickname and passwords..
maybe enter your cell phone.. it marks your spot... and you put in that number to find that GPS spot.

Yes, I was going to suggest the same, as it does exactly what you asked for. It is no longer available. You can use something like latitude, but it does require some effort on behalf of the user.

Personally, I use tasker. I have a profile set up so that people I allow can send me a text message with the word "Locate". My phone will automatically turn on GPS, then send a text message back with a link to my exact coordinates on google maps. It requires no effort on my part and still get the text message, so I know somebody is looking for me. If you don't mind paying for tasker, I can show you how to set up the profile. It works quite well.

enroute looks perfect....

but it is not on the market. if a friend was in trouble or want to communicate with me there location. I could not just tell them to get "xyz" app on the market and.....

good start.. but anyone else no of another apps similar to enroute on the market?

Google Latitude too hard?

On my Google Maps when signed into latitude it shows everyone who has been "friended" and approved showing their location on the map. So if she was signed into latitude and had maps open she would be visible. Once you sign in you are signed in, so all she would need to do is open maps so it gets her location.

tasker is geat.. but works opposite of what I was trying to accomplish. I want to get their location. :)

Actually, you would put tasker on her phone, and set up the profile. If you want to know where she is, you send her a text, and her phone automatically sends you a text with her location in a link to google maps. It's the same thing as enroute, except it's not a dedicated page that you can navigate to.

i get you.. and totally understand that.

I was thinking for emergency reasons.. at the moment solutions. Tasker would have to be done before hand on all the people I know. and dont know.. in case I might need to find time some day.

ex: "oh, yeah I can come get you. just go download app "xyz" from the market and ping me... I will go to that location and get you. I grab my keys and head out the door, see you in 20mins."

Enroute was perfect.. but no longer on the market... so not a solution for quick needs.

Understood. Unfortunately, I don't think there's anything like enroute, then. I'll look around. Latitude might be your best bet.

Here I Am sends a google maps link by sms / email.

There are lots of choices.

I use one called Send Position.

But I've seen many location sharing apps in the market.

Isn't any solution going to require that though? You can't just retrieve info from a person's GPS receiver without any effort beforehand or else that would be a major security issue. Also, keep in mind that any app that frequently uses the GPS receiver will impact that person's battery life.

Sounds to me like all these people need to get AAA or something. :D

codemonkey.. thanks.. that is what I was wanting... but that app has issues with GPS. I found that there was another app of the same name "Here I am" by a different dev... it works as I need. testing it now.

takeshi... take a look at "here I am" in the market.. (the one with a bit "A" in the icon. i appreciate the input anyways.

That is why I suggested latitude. Everything is going to require some setup and authorization. Latitude is already on the phone. Just sign in on maps and every time she opens the maps or navigation she will be visible.

It cant be that hard for her to open maps.

I'd forgotten all about Here I am. I remember not being too impressed with it, but if it does exactly what you want, then that's awesome.

I like "GPS Status".
You can share your position by email or text. It sends a link to Google maps with longitude/latitude coordinates.

We used it several times while traveling in Europe to find our way back to where we parked the car (have to save your position as soon as you park of course).
