Root What are Dex files (in Link2sd)

I am trying to decipher where/how the internal storage space on my phone is being used...I was looking at files in Link2sd, just for curiosity, and found that the apps are bigger according to Link2sd.

In Link2sd I'm seeing the total size of the app made up of Apk, Dex and Lib. Not sure what those things are...I thought apk was just the app itself?

For example, when I look at Twidroyd (something I'd like to delete to gain space), it says Total 5.19mb made up of apk 3.21mb, dex 1.98mb and lib 0. But when i go into settings, applications and look at Twidroyd, it says the app is only 1.98mb.

So I'm curious why the discrepancy and what Dex is?

Dex files are optimized class files that allow code to work in a different, sometimes more efficient, manner.

App developers have various reasons that determine if they will publish an app with dex files, or deodexed.
(mostly backwards compatibility issues )

OK, I'm chewing on that for a bit... LOL You are a developer, eh?

So dex files are a permanent part of the app that affects how it works? And an app (if dexed) is going to be bigger than the "download size" indicates?

How might I know before downloading an app if it has the dex files that will affect my internal storage space? And/or, does it matter?

LOL...I was in my element during 4 years of journalism classes (print, broadcast, radio, photo...) and then I entered the "real world" of professional print journalism and had my enthusiastic dreams squashed and my mouth stuffed! Ah, to be young and idealistic again....

LOL, yeah the "real world" and marriage did that for me.
The reporters would come to me to edit their video and audio. But I guess I sucked at everything else... so now I'm a truck driver. lol

Oh, that's sad...about the marriage part, not the truck driving, LOL. I also liked the edit booth...the hands-on stuff was really fun. Cheers!!
