Root what are kernel updates?

Hi There,

Just a quick noob(ish) question, what are Kernel updates?

I'm using GingerVillain 2.4, there is an option in Villain Setup to install several Kernel Updates. What are these? what do they do? there is no write up or description next to any, just that i can download and install them. I'm guessing they are to do with overclocking, but how would i know which to install etc?

Kernels are intergrated into the rom. Its what makes the rom run. The beating heart of android if you will. Kernels add much of the behind the scenes functionality that you get from a ROM. It is also responsible for how the CPU runs, how it decides to change frequency and even how much power it uses at that frequency. The kernel is probably the biggest and most important part of Android.
