Well, you should say what you mean then! i.e. making or preparing dinner; fixing something infers there's something wrong that needs fixing. Unless of course you were fixing dinner to the wall, but that would be affixing wouldn't it...

I'm fixing to have my head explode from the nonsense here but right now I'm fixing to get ready to fix dinner.

Tonight, I'm fixing spaghetti.

And that's exactly what I mean.

It isn't edible out of a box and it isn't edible when you spin your own pasta.

But you can fix it by putting it in a pot of boiling water.

And I'm going to have my wife fix her hair before dinner.

Any problems with that - fix up a complaint, and I'll give it all the consideration necessary.
