Root What backup to use before trying new rom?

Hi folks, I've been reading threads about various backup options. I've got jellytime r22 but speakerphone doesn't work - which I would ideally like to have, but could live without. Thing is I've tweaked by phone JUST how I like it and I'd really like to be able to put it all back! So if I flash again I'm going to have my work cut out, especially if I have to come back to r22 in the end.

Ideally I'm looking for something like a dd sda backup on linux - something that can clone the device perfectly and dump it all straight back if something goes wrong. Looks like that doesn't exist, but...

if I use titanium backup, can i then restore my apps and app data on the new or old rom, whichever I end up going with? Or can I only restore on the exact rom I've come from?

Also, will it backup and restore system settings?

Or is there anything better...?
 
I use titanium. You can back up all apps and data for use on a new ROM, andeven in the free version you cm batch backup user apps.

For cloning the device if something goes wrong. There is an option in clockworkmod, or 4EXT (whatevver one you use) to back up and restore. So if you backup your r22 and then don't like r23 you can restore the backup and everything will be just a it was before you flashed r23.

I'm not too sure with backing up system settings with titanium as I have never tried. I just set up my settings after a flash and use titanium for my apps.

Now that looks like the ticket! Backup on clockworkmod running now. Thanks a lot!

Didn't realise it was quite so easy. Think I might have to try quite a few roms in this case...
 
Yep - just use TB for user apps (+data). The paid version is worth it as the free version only lets you restore one app at a time. With 80-odd apps that's a pain! With the pro version it's click and forget ...

Excellent business sense, that!

Worked a treat. Backed up with clockworkmod, updated to r23, restored apps, checked everything working, backed up again with clockworkmod, now trying blackout ics...
 
I would recommend you use Titanium Back up to restore only Apps + App data.

You can use it to restore system app data but this can cause issues. When going from a lower version of the ROM to a higher version, backing app and restoring system app data is better than a dirty flash.

Ext4/CWM - Backup ROM
Titanium Backup - Backup apps + data
Nova/Apex - Can backup desktop settings
