EDIT - it then scans for PC36IMG like 4 times, says no file found
is that normal for it to scan for this each time? should there be this file???

now i scroll down and choose recovery and it goes to
htc evo 4g screen for a bit then screen goes blank...
nothing...
am i not waiting long enough to enter recovery??? this doesn't always happen but is concerning...
is there something i'm missing in my files???
should i change my recovery mode???
i'm using ClockworkMod v2.6.0.1
TIA

You do have to wait long enuff for it to do the scan for files before going into recovery. Next time you do it watch for it to do it's scan then enter recovery

The scanning is normal. Hboot has the option for flashing img files to overwrite internal partitions. If you put a file named PC36IMG.zip on the top level of your sdcard, hboot will scan for it, and when it finds it, it will flash over whatever partitions you want. When you don't have one of those files on the card, it scans, and says it didn't find anything. It's supposed to do that. On that note, though, you can't do anything until it finishes scanning. You simply don't have the option. It only takes a couple seconds, so just wait. That is not your current problem, though, and is not causing it. I would suggest you reflash recovery. If you want 2.6.0.1, specifically, you'll probably need to get it from the link in my sig.
