Root What do new kernels and radios achieve?

As the title says really... what is each and what advantage do they bring to my phone?

I want to speed up the processor a little and prolong battery life as much as I can (is this kernels?)

I also want to improve my wireless, 3G and general mobile signals (I assume this is radios from the name?)

I have a generic version of 2.2 (1.32.405.6) rooted with radio s-off all ready to go, but I don't fully understand what each one does and the benefits of them, so I want to know I get it before going ahead with them and eventually a custom sense-based ROM

Kernels & radios usually depend on what rom you're going to use.
You need to read what recommendations the devs make for a particular rom; & what they will help you achieve.

As you guessed, kernels can help with power consumption, performance etc, same with radios.

I've kept my radio stock, kernel is whatever came with CM7rc3.

Thank you :) So I was right on what they do then? That's always nice to know that I have learnt a little more :)

I'm going to stick with the current ROM as I'm just after a slight increase in performance and battery time along with the signals (these are much more important than the performance)

Do you know where I can see what ones work best with what ROMS? (I had a link on my laptop, but I sold that without backing up my bookmarks - DUH)

If you go to the devs section for the dhd on xda, select the rom you're interested in, read through it & the dev has usually made a note of the best radio &/or kernel to use with the rom.

Read some of the posts & replies to get extra info.

I was scanning through there earlier and found the radio from gingerbread, so I'm giving that a bash now and I gotta say.... its much better than the froyo radio is.

Dunno if I wanna stay stock til gingerbread is officially here, or if I want to get it now ;)

That's what tempts me, bit with 2.3 due out on unbranded handsets this month I'm tempted to wait and see what happens..... if I wait, I'll just root and install custom ROMs on the girlfriends desire ;)

Give her your old StarTac & tell she's lucky to get that.

If what they say is true, ota gb should be in the next week or 2...

Can't do that!!! She's gonna root this month anyway when she can upgrade to something else anyway.
The next 2weeks? I think I can wait it out then ;)

I'm petrified of trying it as I almost bricked my old Galaxy S by trying to root it, and the DHD way of rooting looks way more complicated. I'm kinda surprised they've not just gone "here, here's an OS which allows you to root or whatever you like, just don't blame us if you brick your phone".

Rooting it is dead simple :) I even flashed the gingerbread radio onto it and got a slight improvement :)

It's just a pain flashing new ROMs cos you have to backup everything you don't want to lose and then our it all back afterwards
