What do you think about the new LG G5 flagship?

I'm on the fence between the g5, and the V10. Actually leaning towards the V10. Interested in a better DAC, not sure it's going to be worth the price of the "friend" for the G5.

It's interesting, but it depends on what range of features it will support. The battery swapping is in a sense the least of it, though probably the most useful feature for most people.

Will it take off? My feeling is that it needs a more compelling application than the "camera grip" and "higher-end audio add-on" that have been shown so far before this will become a big thing, but I could be wrong.

Design wise their LG X range looks better. If I had to go for looks it would have to be the S7. However, there is just something a bit more interesting with the LG G5.

LG has opened up the modular design to developers so hopefully we'll see some innovation at a decent price. The pricing for the 'Friends' is quite expensive. I like the look of the B & O DAC but it's coming in at about €180.

The V-10 also was a contender for me along with the Nexus 6P.
The V-10 was just going to be a little too large for my taste and with the Nexus 6P I just wasn't quite sold on the look. Yeah, I know, the appearance plays a role in my decision making, sorry.

After extensive research, video watching, and reading until my eyes bled, I pulled the trigger on the G5 :D

I'm with Verizon and honestly, I would love to have a chance with rooting this thing, but if it doesn't happen, not too worried about it. (my fellow rooting friends here are probably going to cringe lol :D )
All my devices up to now I have achieved root and flashed this and that, borked/fixed this and that, but lately haven't messed around with flashing and doing root stuff. Rooting has kind of lost its luster for me. :eek:

Plus, saw this offer with the free extra battery and 360 cam, kinda influenced me:)

Felt good, but slippery to me. The thing I did notice was towards the bottom where the module/battery can disconnect from the device, you can see through the phone on the right and left sides; slight and I would not have noticed it if I wasn't holding it up to show someone and there was a bright light behind them. Not really concerned as I put it into a case straightaway :D
I liked the way the top of the screen kind of wrapped over the top slightly, but again, in a case you cannot see it.

I'd read about the gap(s), I don't think it'd be a make or break for me.
I could probably seal that up easy enough if it became an OCD thing...
 
Mikestony, I hope you post some additional first impressions about the G5 after you've enjoyed putting it through its paces. I'm running a G3 now, so your input is greatly valued. Once you've allowed things to settle in, I hope you might be able to share your impression of battery life. I think I can give up some screen size for better speed and improved battery life.

Well sure!
Installed a 64GB sd card today...what a PAIN IN THE ARSE! I swear I was going to break the small ass drawer that it goes in, but I did get it ....carefully!
As far as the No-App drawer, I am running Next Launcher to bypass that little annoyance. :D

Edit: oh, as far as battery life, that will have to wait as I am burning through it just setting it up and tinkering with it, so it won't be fair to judge it quite yet ;)

Extremely condensed 1st impressions review here:
Pros:
1) Feel-In-Hand
2) LG's UX (less the launcher,I never use any mfgs launcher,they all leave something to be desired).
3) Performance: Very preliminary,but,seems a bit snappier & fluid vs the SD 820 powered S7 Edge.
4) Curb appeal: Totally subjective,but,I like it,very surprised I'd like the Gold version,ya gotta see it for yourself.

Cons:
1) Build quality: While most of this is cosmetic & is of little concern to me,LG should be ashamed of themselves. :paperbagdroid:
The fit & finish of the battery cartridge/WTF ya wanna call it,is where they dropped the ball.Not just for the small gaps,but the contours/chamfered edges do not align w/the main body.
Again,mostly cosmetic,but,easy to see w/o looking too hard.
LG is going out on a limb with the whole "Friends" scheme,the last thing they need is obvious cosmetic flaws to give pause to potential buyers.

Overall,I really like the phone,battery life will determine whether I stay in this phone or,utilize my 14 day buyer's remorse grace period & Jump back to the S7 Edge.

EDIT & UPDATE:
1) Battery life,even after only a week,is awesome,more than enough for my daily use & plenty to spare when I get home in the evening.
So,as for that being as make or break,I'm not looking back to my previous phone,the S7 Edge,the LG G5 is a keeper. :thumbsupdroid:

2) As for the build quality/fit & finish that I was not pleased about:

I returned my original handset & got a replacement during the buyers remorse period,no worse for the wear.
The T-Mobile clerk was more than happy to do the exchange & definitely took note of the mismatched chamfered edges & the sharp/protruding edge surrounding the SD/SIM Card slot.
The replacement handset is free of any such defects,looks & feels great,nice fit & finish with the main body & the battery module,it's a keeper. :thumbsupdroid:

Most would be surprised to switch from the S7 Edge to the G5,but,the curved edges just wasn't doing it for me.
Screen,for me ,was way too sensitive & picking up phantom touches,no doubt due to the zero bezel design.
Too much of a good thing,they really need to reel that back just a hair & they'd have nailed it.

Actually,I think the "Friends" refers to all the other unattached peripherals,but,who's keeping score.... :D
 
Is there a little plastic protective piece covering the camera lens? Like the plastic you remove when the phone is new? I didn't see one but seems like my photos are a tad, let's say, cloudy.

I was gonna ask the same,just uploaded a bunch of pix & haven't had time to check it out.
I didn't wanna start pickin' at something that might not be there.......
Gonna comb the unboxing vids on You-Tube.................

Just took a look at my pix,they look fine to me.
It's tricky determining if a protective plastic is on there:
The outer edge seems clean,but,the flash area cutout makes ya wonder......
I'm getting ready to call it a day @ work,when I get home,I'll hit up the iFixit site & ask them if they remember seeing any such film on their teardown.......................
EDIT: Not finding a teardown just yet :paperbagdroid: ,I'm sure one will pop-up soon..........

Yeah, I was looking for some videos for the G5 and didn't see someone taking a protective plastic off.
Hmm, maybe I'll try a different camera app to compare pix.

I like the phone overall... I think LG did a good job with shape and feel. I've read some reviews that said they missed the mark, but I think they hit it. I'll admit, the primary selling point for me is the spare battery. I think I'm able to charge most of the time anymore when my battery is low, but I don't want to be forced to. I just pop out one batt for another and 15 seconds later, I'm at 100% again. You can't beat that IMO.
One funky thing on my wifes G5 though... The eject button (or whatever you call it) is angled a bit and sharp as sh!t! That will eventually be covered with a case, but it is sharp. Mine is smooth... Almost feels recessed. Hers is definitely not.
 
the wife and I bought some g5's, first android anything ever. we've known nothing but windows phones. anyway we love the g5 for many reasons. I do have a question for anyone or all, how do I delete apps, like the att apps? on a wp you can just delete them. all I can find is a disable button. android had been a learning curve for sure.

Unfortunately,disabling the AT&T bloat is the best you're gonna see.
As for the rest of the AT&T bloat that you can't disable, you can turn off the permissions that are granted to it, basically neutering it.
To do this,it's located in the same spot as the disable feature, just look under Permissions in each app.......

Yeah, if it is preinstalled software (a.k.a. bloat) you can only disable the apps as they reside in the /system partition.
Normal non-rooted users cannot delete /system apps, they can only disable them. ;)

I also see that as I am typing this, my friend @KOLIO has posted too:) He's more Android smart than I am! :D
