What does 'Buddies Now' widget actually do?

The Buddies Now widget doesn't seem any different from adding a shortcut to a Contact?

I thought it was supposed to show you the latest status updates etc., but it really doesn't seem to do anything much at all?

yeah, i dont see it doing anything useful either. u could freeze it, or if ur not rooted, just ... dont put it on ur homescreen

put it on your home screen then tap on it. you can then select a contact. I have 8 on one of my home screen all with different contacts. Like a favourites for your contacts.

I use it all the time and recommend it especially if you have hundreds of contacts

So it is just the same as adding a contact shortcut to the homescreen.

Pity as the videos I've seen of the Galaxy S showed a much more useful buddies now widget, which showed latest facebook/social media status update of your favourite contacts.

yeah you get updates as long as you have your facebook and phone contact synced
but you are right, it is basically a contact short cut

I have updated my S2 to 2.3.4 and now +buddy seems playing up. Those that I chose from my contacts disappeared from homescreen, only the blue boxes left. Anyone know why?
