just did the whole .320 to .340 via SBF but I'm not even sure why. well i did it initially cause i was rooted and wanted my phone to be clean as 'out-of-box' state. however when i did it i still had all the apps and even service on my phone.

props to colchiro for his/her help performing sbf

FYI, and if anybody else is trying to perform SBF and doesn't know how these are the files and instructions I used.

Motorola USB drivers (Windows 32 bit) (Windows 64 bit)
RSD Lite 4.8 (Get It Here)
Droid X: 2.3.320 Full SBF (Get It Here)
Droid X: 2.3.340 System SBF (Get It Here)

  • Unzip the both SBF files
  • Open RSD Lite, tap the “…” button
  • Select the 2.3.320 Full SBF file that you just unzipped
  • Boot your phone into Boot Loader
    • Power OFF the Phone
    • HOLD the Volume Down Button + Camera Button + Power Button
    • The screen will flash
    • Immediately release the buttons
    • You will see the boot loader information displayed on your phone and sou should also now see your phone in RSD Lite
      • You may need to click show devices in RSD Lite.
    • Click the Start button and allow your phone to flash 2.3.320 Full SBF
    • The Phone will reboot and you should then have 2.3.320 installed.
  • To install 2.3.340 System SBF follow these same steps, just using the 2.3.340 System SBF file.
If your phone gets stuck in a loop then yank the battery and perform a Data Wipe/Factory Reset.

  • Hold down the Home Button + Power Button until you see the Android and Triangle (with Exclamation).
  • Then press the Search Button (Magnifying Glass).
  • Factory Reset

And again, a big thanks to RoOoLeR, colchiro and Steven58 for all of their help.

Could you have just done an OTA update to .340 instead of the system only sbf? Would that work?

Sometimes you need to SBF for other reasons besides upgrade. I encourage everyone to grab every new SBF file that comes out when it leaks. I have needed to SBF out of brick many times. Also most roms can still be run from the .320 leak. I didnt' flash the .340 SBF until I needed to last night.

FYI, there is hardly any risk to mess things up with the well developed roms (ApeX, Fission, GummyJAR, Rumm Rx, Darkslide, Tranq and others.

My experience is with messing around with pre-release stuff.

Sbf files can be used to upgrade but are mainly used to recover a semi bricked device. The .340 sbf you used is a system only sbf file which is why your data remained intact. Most other full sbf files are the entire system and can contain your bootloader, kernel, system, and baseband all in one. If your phone gets stuck in an endless bootloop or your phone won't boot at all, and you can't get into recovery, the only solution is the sbf file. As long as you can access the bootlaoder and have a charged battery you can flash the sbf file. It's extra important for us because we can't enter Clockwork with a key sequence like most other phones so if you can't boot up your phone to bootstrap recovery, there may be no way to restore a backup or flash a new zip through clockwork.

Thanks for the information. But yeah, I only did it because my phone kept booting into Clockwork Mod. Yes, I know you can Bootstrap and all is honky doory. But my peace of mind is a lot better knowing that my X is as close to stock out-of-box state as possible.
