Root What exactly is root?

Hi there,

Im a complete noob to anything other than Apple products. I understand what root is when talking about a Unix/Linux system, but don't quite understand what it is in regards to my Evo.

What exactly is rooting, and what are the pros/cons of doing it? If anyone has any links to intelligible information about it that would be greatly appreciated.

basically gives you to power to make your phone as awesome as can be, or to fudge it up completely. your choice. lol. check the forum here and at xda for everything you could possibly want to know.
