On my G3 when I double tapped the home screen to turn the screen off I had a cool retro TV effect but I can't see that option on the g4. Did they remove it?

I think they did remove it. I had it on my g2 but I can't find it on here
I can't speak to LG (as they may have changed things), but the cool CRT-like screen off animation was replaced with a boring fade-to-black in Android 5.x.
