Help What happens when programs "save to SD card"?

I have a bit of confusion about what it means when applications save to the SD card. On the Samsung Galaxy S2, "/sdcard" actually points to the internal storage space, and "/sdcard/external_sd" points to the actual external SD cards. From what I understand, this is a different paradigm from several other phones.

So when I use programs like nandroid to do a full backup, and choose the option "backup to SD card", it seems like it stores to internal memory.
For safety, is that ok?
If it's desired to save to the actual external SD, is there any way in android settings to make the default for anything sd card related to save to "/sdcard/external_sd"?

i think you are right - saving apps to sd card really means saving to internal phone sd card, NOT the external phone sd card.

when i replaced my captivate and took my external sd card to my new g s 2, it did NOT transfer my saved app data, such as the data from games. unfortunately, my game app information is stuck on my old captivate, which was rooted!

i do not know about backing up, and if this only saves external sd card data, but i bet this is the case.

if your phone is damaged, unless it is on your external sd card, you are screwed, i believe.
