What is a lock screen for?

effluent

Android Enthusiast
I was just wondering what the need for a lock screen is. I've used the No Lock app for a long time and don't know why you'd want to bother with a lock screen. Never had my phone turn on in my pocket or anything, so what's the use? It's nice to be able to just hit a button and turn the phone on without having to go through an extra step.

Icons, etc on touch screens can be activated by accident if the screen is awakened in a pocket or just from handling.

The lock screen is a layer of protection from that for most users.

I, for one, as I'm sure at least a few others do, use a "Secure" lock screen, meaning I have a password. Phones don't exist anymore, just cellular devices. Almost every cellular device out there now have the capability to, and often do, store priceless personal information that I certainly wouldn't want others having access to.

The lock screen is really for added security, I suppose, but only when using a pass code of some sort.

Otherwise, it's so you don't butt dial your great aunt Sally while you're wasted at a party.

I can see the security aspect..but I've gone without a lockscreen for 10 months without the screen turning on by accident in my pocket or whatever. I guess I can see it happening with some phones with a lot of hardware buttons. I have an EVO and it's hard to push the buttons even when you're trying to.

You can quickly change the sound settings from the lock screen and various other things with those apps that allow you to customize your lock screen.

I don't have any apps on the home screen. I'm vain enough to use a picture of the Arkansas River that I took. And I prefer looking at the picture rather than a bunch of icons. I also don't keep anything truly personal on the phone. Don't use social media and definitely will not use the phone for banking.

I don't lock mine either, but of course I know why people do.

I don't keep my phone in my pocket, I keep it in a holster on my belt. My phone is never out of my sight, which is why I don't lock it.

As was said, Some people do put their phones in their pocket (Or purse like me). I've put it into my purse without turning the screen off properly, I had to turn off my phone because it was tweeking. Apparently too much stuff had been pressed on my phone and it couldn't handle it. LOL. I personally like the pattern lock option. Just in case you've got snoopy friends. XD

The main purpose I see is to prevent launching apps or calling people while the phone is you pocket. For me it also shows my upcoming agenda, unlocks my phone, turns phone to vibrate, and launches my camera.

Ya I have to agree with all of these people that say lock screens are for security and avoid pocket dial.....

2 Really quick stories.... hope you get a laugh....

Security....... So I was going out with this chick that had a past that caused her to suspect guys of cheating.... so I was unhappy with her sent a text to a buddy about her.... guess who went through my phone (as I had no security at the time) I was in so hot water this time.......

Story 2 Pocket Dial....... Same chick (you know from above) I was out with my buddies and you guy know how guys don't talk about chicks...... hehe well lets just say the phone some how pocket dialed her... again in hot water.....

Good for you. Doesn't mean that it isn't an issue for others though. It's not just devices with "a lot of hardware buttons".
