I just rooted my evo today so sorry if this is a dumb question. I've been reading all day and have seen this "CLOCKWORKMOD" used quite often. What is this and what does it do and do i need it?

It is a custom recovery.
When you power on your phone while holding volume down, you open hboot. From there you select recovery and the ta da...you will be in clockworkmod recovery. (Unless you have Amon recovery flashed, which is the same thing but different 'brand')

A recovery allows you to flash (install) the different ROMs, kernels, themes, mods, fonts, anything custom.
Also allows you to do the wipes necessary before the ROMs and kernels.
And another thing, it allows you to make NANDRIOD backups, which are important every single time you make a change via a theme or mod or kernel etc. to your phone.

NANDROID backups allows you to 'restore' your phone exactly the way it was before you made that change, in case something screws up.

Check out the Rooting for dummies thread (sticky up on the top of the page) and it should explain more about what a recovery is.

Thanks so much for the info! i been reading that thread for hours and used it to root. I wish there was a rooting for even more dummies that i can read because that's where i would belong. :(

This NANDROID back up.......Is this the samething as Titanium Back up Pro? I mean can i use one or the other?

A nandroid is a complete image of what your phone is, settings, apps, homescreen layouts, kernel, you name it. If you put a new ROM or something on and things go wrong, you just go restore what you had, and everything looks exactly the way you had it when you made the backup.

Titanium backup is an app that you would open up, and back up only certain apps and settings that you choose from the list, then you would re download that app and restore what you had saved.

If you happen to mess up and your phone freezes and wont boot or gets stuck in a 'bootloop', titanium wont help help you. You would have to boot into your recovery, select the file of your nandroid, and basically restore your phone in its entirety.

And Amon RA recovery has been said to be better many times. You can get it from the app ROM manager in the market. But all the features in ROM manager wont work unless youre using Clockwork Mods Recovery. Which make things easier __sometimes__. You could start out using Clockwork with the app ROM Manager until you get used to what youre doing..
