Help What is Footprints?

Erm, I don't mean to sound stupid, but...

What exactly does Footprints do?

Is there a help file or web page that describes it somewhere?

Any time I tried googling it I got people preaching to me about carbon dioxide :(

regards,
/alan

Footprints associates photos with places you visited, in order to create your own personal numeric travel diary, that you can share online.
Let's say you're off on vacations in Egypt, you've visited 20 different places in 2 weeks, with Footprints you can make a personal map to remember where each monument is located, etc.

Footprints uses geo-tagging to tag your photos with gps coordinates and data so that it can show you the location, date etc of your photos on a map, useful as mentioned above, if you are on holiday, or if you want to document a trip somewhere.

ok so i'm going to Gran Canaria in 3 weeks, do i take photos as normal and then look at the through footprints or take them through footprints itself?

I think you just take the pics as normal, and then use footprints to map them, but i havent used footprints at all so im not sure.

Especially since, TBH, the camera is kind-of lousy.

What I think I'm much more likely to do is use a real digital camera, and use the phone as a GPS logger. Then I can use a program such as GeoSetter to merge the GPS tracks with the photographs, and I get geotagged decent-quality pictures!

just querying if using the apps does infact need to use data access? if so then charges abroad may make this quite a pricey app to use.

You need to take the picture using the Footprints app, then it'll be stored in Footprints.

It will use a small amount of data, because when one's taken a picture using Footprints, the phone will query Google's database to find out the address of the location, and (if I recall correctly) show it on a map. If you have roaming data turned off it should still work OK, just not log the address. The picture stays stored on the phone, it's not uploaded to a server.

Where do you go to access it online? I think this app sounds awesome and can't wait to test it out!

It's one of the apps that's available by default on the HTC Desire. I thought it only stored information on the phone, I didn't realise it uploaded to the web.

With pretty basic use of the Flickr API, you should be able to create a suitable website, if it hasn't been done already.

Is there a better alternative to Footprints at all?
It is good, but missing some simple functionality I would like such as ability to specify my own categories: I will never use 'shopping', and there isn't a category for 'accommodations' such as logging B&Bs or hotels you liked.

Hi all,
Just joined here today after looking for information about footprints.
On a recent long European trip, I took a footprints picture each morning. Because I had no data connection, no map was showing at the time I took the picture, but the GPS coordinates were recorded.
Back at home, I now see the maps associated with each picture - so data use is not always a consideration.

Now I'd like to plot the trip on a map but don't know where to upload the info to do that. Does anyone have suggestions?

If you upload the pictures to Flickr, Flickr will show the location of each picture on a map. Other photo-sharing sites probably do similar things.
