Help What is GPS?

Can anyone tell me what is GPS?
I notice this when I open Notification screen, there I can turn on/off Bluetooth, Wi-fi and GPS.

Is this important and should be turned on all the time?

It is the Global Positioning System antenna in all modern phones. It allows you to use the signal from geolocating satellites to pinpoint your position on the planet.

It's only a receiver, but if you leave it on, there is a battery drain and other apps can use that information to send back to other sources to track you.

If you are using location services, like "find restaurants near me" it should be on, otherwise turn it off.

How Does GPS Work In Cell Phones?

You will need it on if you use location based features on your phone such as Maps, Navigation, Latitude as well as, amongst others, your internet browser if you want location based pages from Google.

Personally, I leave mine on 24/7 as it doesn't impact on battery or data that much.

There is only a battery drain when apps attempt to obtain your location. Simply having the option doesn't use any battery at all (unlike Bluetoth and WiFi, which will consume battery simply by having them on as they are actively searching for devices to pair with or networks to join!)
