Root what is "rooting" exactly whats the difference between rooting and roms? looking for better battery

hi
ive been hearing alot about "rooting" and all of these roms that you can get for your phone and how rooting and adding roms can really help with your battery life and some apps and common phone features is this true ?if so can someone please tell me exactly what is rooting and how to root my vibrant. im manly looking to get atleast 12 hours of battery life not the seven hour crap ive been getting, not as much lag and better youtube .

ps i have done alot of suggested things to help with battery life
turning down brightness
black background
2g only
closing apps
 
You must root before you can install a new ROM on you phone. You cannot flash a rom without rooting. I am a strong believer in either the Axura or Nero v3 ROMs for better battery life. More so of the latter

2.2 is the latest Android operating system aka as FROYO - at present stock Vibrants are running the 2.1 ECLAIR operating system.

Android 2.3 is just around the corner and is also known as GINGERBREAD.

FYI - Nero v3, whilst a 2.2 operating system, uses some of GINGERBREAD's framework.
 
Nandroid is means of backup within ClockWorkMod.

I am not familiar with the IO Kernel as I am using the Voodoo5 enhanced kernel provided with Nero v3, which like the IO modified kernel is a lag fix. Like a said, I'm a little new to all this myself but I believe the IO kernel is used with

If you go the Nero route, just follow Team Whiskey's instructions on xda-developers regarding enabling Voodoo

I am rooted. Downloaded RomManager, flashed Clockwordmod Recovery, then I reboot into recovery, but I do not see the option for nandroid? Am I doing something wrong?

If you choose the option backup/restore and then backup, it is nandroid that makes the backup. You will not see a "nandroid" option
 
Perfect, thanks man. I am actually looking to run your exact set up (neroV3 with voodoo5). Will give it a go tonight after work. Thanks again.

When you install Clockworkmod Recovery the first option is to Flash the latest recovery then select your phone. When you do that, then you can either reboot into recovery or backup current ROM. If you go the route through recovery you will see "backup/restore" enter that menu and there you can create a backup or manage your restore files. That internal menu is titled Nandroid.
 
When I got started with rooting I used z4root for one click rooting then I just went from there by installing rom manager and so on. I didn't really know wtf I was doing at first but I caught on pretty quickly.
