what is rooting

Hi name is sean and I have a lg ally. I am trying to figure out what rooting is and if I can make my phone faster because it lags and if I can expand my app storage.not sure if rooting would have anything to do with that but it seems to me with what I could understand from other forums it does.can somebody please help me!
