Root What is SBF'ing? Want to root 2.3

Forgive me guys I'm an X newb but I'm experienced with rooting Evo's and OG droids etc but I'm not following this SBF back to Froyo business for the X. The reason I ask is because I have a few buddies and my father who took the 2.3 update and after seeing a few rooted Evo's want me to root theirs now.

Someone please give me the lowdown, I've searched and have not found much explaining it. I would really appreciate it!

If they have installed all the OTA updates for Gingerbread, there is no way to root the phone with the available tools, such as Z4Root. So, to get around this you need to program the phone with an older SBF file back to Froyo 2.2, then root it with Z4Root and then flash a 2.3 rom that is already rooted. Look through the stickys in the All Things Root section. there are some good step by step instruction to get you where you want to be.

Doing an sbf puts you back at a stock X with Froyo 2.2, just like it would have come out of the box from Verizon. Then from there you can run z4root and root it and have lots of fun.
