Help What is that button on the left of the dial pad?

In the Android 2.3.4 User Manual, page 80, Placing and Ending Calls, when the phone is open, I have the dial pad.

Under the dial pad there are 3 buttons, the middle is the green phone to place the call, on the right is the back space button for correction, what is that button on the left? What does it do?

Does it show a 3x3 of little squares? Mine just closes the dialpad so you can see the full list of contacts youve called recently.

It's a Samsung Nexus S.

So that button either add the number to the contact list or opened up the contact list.

I never dared to tap that button in case it does something I don't want to do. Wish there is a tooltip feature in Android where I can hover it to see what it does so I can decide if I want to tap it. Thanks for the info.

Actually, Android displayed 2 different icon on the button depending on the situation:

Scenario 1) After making the phone call:

Left Button: Add Call
Middle Button: Red Phone
Right Button: Numeric keypad

Scenario 2) When dialing the phone call:

Left Button: a symbol that looks like a tape recorder (what is this)??
Middle Button: Green Phone (to dial the number)
Right Button: Correction symbol (to correct entry)

What is the left button in scenario 2?

Yes, like a line with 2 circles underneath it. So that is the voicemail button, that is cool because now it is so easy to dial the voicemail.

Thanks for your help.
