What is the best tethering option for Evo?

I followed the same procedure and cannot connect with password security on but I on an XP.

Thanks for the responses.

It *should* work the same for XP, but if you're not having any luck then perhaps not. Did you root with Unrevoked? I'm also running the stock Sprint ROM and kernals. But I did have to go through the WiFi encryption steps twice before it worked. I'm guessing I might have missed something on the first run. When I started the 2nd time, I just created a new SSID and started again.

Yes, same procedure as you. I spent much time on the encryption issue with the help of Matlock but no joy.

It's not a big deal I guess, with the allowed list someone can log onto wireless tether but not access the Internet unless I authorize it.

I want to use my phone as a 4G hotspot. Other than Sprint's, is there a good app for that?

Could I tether to my Xbox 360? I'd prefer to have a wireless (no tether option) that also works with OSX.

I have tried about all the tethering options and most of them work to a point.. The actual Sprint paid hotspot option delivers the best speeds and most reliable option out of all of them..

I run 5 devices off of the hotspot option and all run without a hitch..

the problem with wireless tether is sometimes it requires a phone reboot. AND it only allows 2 connections. it can be slow on surfing. but downloads have been good so far.

i'm using the 2.0.5 pre11.apk. it's the latest release. i also can't seem to get the connection unless i have 4g activated.

easytether has faster websurfing and even faster downloads. but requires being plugged into pc.

i don't see any real joy in paying for pdanet. it may connect wireless, or bluetooth. or whatnot. but has anyone been able to make it work? other then the wired connection.

I like easy tether the best, its user friendly & only 10 bucks for full use.. then you can use it on any system once you have the desktop drivers saved to your SD card. One time charge of 10 bucks is well worth saving $50/month.. Im not in the best 4G coverage area and it still runs fast, almost as fast as the DSL service I got rid of.

So i'm going to be gettin an evo probably sometime this weekend, and with it, i believe i will be cancelling my home internet because i don't use it enough to justify the 40+ bucks a month i'm spending on it, and also because what i do use it for, i'm sure i can get by with using my phone or using the internet at work. However, i'm sure that occasionally i'll want to tether to my laptop for the bigger screen, ect. What would you guys recommend as the best way to tether for my needs? I'll be gettin a phone from the factory, so i doubt i'll be able to root until the figure out a way to root the new evo's. For as little as i'll be tethering, i dont really want to pay for the wifi hotspot, so would you guys recommend easytether or pdanet or something else?
Also, as a side question, has anyone tried streaming tv while tethering from their phone? I was curious about this, but assume that you probably dont get high enough speeds to be able to do this from your phone.
Thanks for any tips or suggestions, this place has been great for researching this phone before i buy.

I use Barnacle for wifi tethering. Phone must be rooted. I used it with a droid as well, and connected my macbook pro in a cinch. Pretty fast too. Free too.

Yes, I had the same question about streaming tv (from fox, abc, etc...) while tethering. I've heard it won't be great, which is disappointing since I watch several shows online. Still, does anyone know for sure what the quality is like?

Just to add 1 more....
-Root your phone and install Wired Tether. It is free and seems to be the same speed as Easytether (at least in my testing). This one may take a little more work, though, to get it working.

Hey, I need a wired option and looked for this. I don't see it in the market. Is there a link for it? I am rooted and use wireless tether just fine but at work I am on a desktop and would like to circumvent the network so I can check my email.

PDAnet works fine for usb tethering.

I may have already posted in this thread, but I wanted to note I use Easy Tether (paid, so I can access https, which is the only difference), I use it mostly while traveling (car) and never drop connection, even on a 300+ mile car trip. while stationary and with good signal, I have played World of Warcraft and several Aeria Games MMO's using Easytether, and had minimal issues. (there is no 4G in the state I live in, and no plans to add 4G on the map) it is great, works great, and the developer is/was quick to reply to my questions when I was being stupid and not following directions.

EasyTether supports Win 2k/XP/Vista/7, Mac OS X 10.4+, Ubuntu 10.4+, AND Fedora 12+

Just follow the directions when you run the app, you need a download from his website for the computer, you ca DL on the phone (link is there in the app when you launch) or go direct to the site from your computer.

Download EasyTether drivers - EasyTether for Mac OS X, Windows, Ubuntu and game consoles

This was the first app I ever paid for on Android (Robo Defense was 2nd, got them within minutes, but this one was first!) and has saved my butt more times than I can count. great on vacations too, works when using citrix to remote to work also.

i just did a google search and found it. it works great.

In my opinion through my own experiences, wireless tether works the best. I use it to play xbox live, download music, & watch sports online. No 4g in my area but it runs smooth, even with 2-3 bars sometimes. I downloaded pdanet, easy tether & barnacle but couldn't get them to work like wireless tether. Works seamlessly with my macbook, best tethering app there is out there & its free!!

My situation was the same as finndo so he convinced me to try Easy Tether. $10 well spent!
