AMEN! The Samsung slider could very easily be a holiday release. I am counting on a non-slider SGS2 to hit FCC any day now... just like the Bionic just did.

You're right we will see I'm just not getting my hopes up if it comes then I will get it if not I won't care to much ill look to something else.

That's kind of my feeling, too. I'm sick of getting my hopes up for something that just isn't coming any time soon. I just don't know why everything has to be such a stupid secret with these people. Lack of communication only leads to a lot of people jumping the gun on something inferior because they're tired of not knowing.

If Samsung said "Okay, we're for sure coming out with the SGSII on Verizon in September. We don't have a definite day yet, but we can tell you it's a non-slider, 1.2 GHz, LTE, Super Amoled Plus screen at 4.3", and an 8MP camera with a VGA front-facing camera, all running on Gingerbread", I would definitely wait for it and give them my money, regardless of what Moto does.

But, what's going to happen is that the September 8 date is going to turn out to be a total fabrication (won't nearly be the first time a "map list" has turned out to be completely wrong, and I can't imagine Verizon releasing two super phones on the same day. . .), and with Moto officially confirming a September release of the Bionic, I'm going to jump the gun and go with Moto. And then the SGSII will come out a month later, and I'll be kicking myself and Samsung will be short the $300 I was going to spend (along with plenty other people) on the phone if they'd only opened their stupid mouth.

So yeah, I'm tired of waiting. Whoever comes first gets my money.

My guess that Stratosphere will be slider LTE phone is largely based on previous leak of 4G slider phone and this leaked MAP list. But source of that leaked roadmap looks quite suspicious and it may not be valid at all. I'm 60/40 on it regarding slider/non-slider.

I'm pretty sure samsung is working on non-slider dual core LTE phone because that's the trend going forward for flagship models. It's just question of when and hope it's coming within Fall this year. So I'm not in "whatever comes first, I will get it" mode. Getting the right one for me is more important. Bionic is too bulky brick for me and I'm not fan of pentile matrix LCD screen, locked boot-loader either.

Bionic is too bulky brick for me and I'm not fan of ..... locked boot-loader either.

yes, the Bionic IS too bulky, I hate that. . . .but what's really the deal with a locked bootloader?

I keep hearing this but I'm not sure exactly what it means. I know it doesn't mean it's not root-able. When I got the DX2, "gingerbreak" was available within a very short period of time. I was able to root and get rid of all the bloatware. True, I got sick of the lagginess and returned it, but the point is I'm pretty sure that had a locked bootloader as well and it didn't make a difference with rooting it.

Can someone explain this to me? I know I'm not understanding the value of an unlocked bootloader correctly.

People blow it out of proportion just like the pentile argument. Locked bootloader only slows devs down a little if you don't run custom roms you won't notice it.

Well I did run custom roms on it, but only to make it run faster and smoother. I don't load a huge amount of apps, so 1 GHz dual core should be plenty.

I do hope that they get gingerbreak working on it at some point soon so I can get rid of the bloatware. I just don't even like looking at it in the app drawer. ;)

Oh ye of little faith...

Look, it's completely obvious to the tech community and most users that 1)Samsung is releasing the SGS2 in the US and 2) the Stratosphere is a Samsung phone coming out on Verizon and 3) Stratosphere is an obvious name for the SGS2 variant.

The reasons?
-Sammy sent an SGS2 literally into the stratosphere in July.
-Sammy sent out telescopes with "keep watch" for SGS2 (skywatching, anyone?)
-Everyone is saying so.

If this is not the case, then this is the most massive PR f***up in mobile phone history and the entire Samsung marketing department should be sacked. I'm not saying the the above isn't possible, but given the millions of $ riding on it, it's just not probable.

And if it's not LTE, then the R and D department needs to be fired.

I guess we'll see.
i really think you're reading too much into the whole stratosphere thing. that's pretty much the upper limits of weather balloons which is why it stopped there.

second, that pr event was for the JAPANESE launch of the gs2. they're supposed to release the footage sometime "in the middle of august" so it could be in as few as a couple of days. do i think they might use that to release some info about the US GS2? sure. i sure hope so.

third, you don't usually associate telescopes with things that are still within earths atmosphere. hence the telescopes for the GALAXY line as advertisement.

my honest opinion is that the stratosphere is going to be the 4g slider that was show in the leaks a few weeks ago. whether that's going to be verizons gs2 i'm hesitant to say, but even without something to use as a frame of reference that screen looks like 4" one

Good point. I would expect a true Galaxy S II variant to be named something like "Nebula", "Supernova", or "Andromeda".

Or, maybe even "Galaxy S II".

"Stratosphere" is too earthly. My guess is that the Stratosphere will end up being a nice mid-range phone. :(

Eh, I think you're being too literal-minded. Stratosphere and stratospheric are already words commonly used to mean "ridiculously high" -- perfect for an image-making pinnacle phone.

BREAKING NEWS: Samsung Stratosphere re-renamed to Samsung Pinnacle!

Quick, somebody backup the forum!

[okay, not really]

I thought that a locked bootloader makes it possible to brick your phone if something goes wrong with initial flash? One of the things I liked about the D1 is that it was physically impossible to brick.

Except you aren't taking into account that the entire tech blogosphere has dubbed the Stratosphere Verizon's SGS2. There would have been a ton of "leaks" to correct this impression if it was the wrong one IMO and it would represent a snafu of "stratospheric" proportions for Samsung marketing. Possible, but not probable.

No that isnt it at all. If you try and mess with the kernel then yes it will brick it but pretty much every phone has the same brick potential if you don't know what you are doing but they have sbf that you can flash if you encounter any problems. It is now more important to make sure you know what you are doing that is all.

But thats the thing the "tech world" is just jumping into a huge assumption. The fact being the sgs2 was said to be 3g and the slider was shown with 4g. Now since there was only 1 phone on the roadmap from sammy with lte I would put my money on a slider for the simple fact that many testers are saying it is 3g. Check out twitter if you don't believe me. Black man x is a tester and he said it was 3g. Everyone is going to be upset when the slider comes out. Me on the other hand will welcome it because all i care about is 4g. The keyboard is a plus not to mention it should have good battery life with the large battery in it. I don't really need a dual core since im not all into gaming and that on the phone and as long as it performs without lag or can remove the stuff that causes lag I dont need a dual core draining the battery. If it is clocked at 1.2ghz like some rumors were saying it will be plenty fast. As long as they put a decent amount of memory in it and don't use the old file system this will easily be able to handle what most people want and I think anymore people say they want dual core like how people used to want iphones so bad because maybe they think it will be a status symbol? I mean to be honest I don't keep my phones that long and if the slider isn't what I like then I will sell it a few months later and get something else. i just feel that people get so worked up over the little things anymore. What are you going to do other than gaming that requires dual core? Even gaming on these devices is hard at times and with my thunderbolt it can handle pretty much every game out there without much of a hiccup and it is only single core. I am like the rest and always want the latest and greatest but now its to the point I am more worried about battery life than anything. All these advances mean nothing if you need to be plugged in all the time.

The problem I've seen is that there really aren't "leaks" that are credible.

It's just that there's so many bloggers repeating the same rumor that people start believing it, but there's nothing remotely official about any of it.

Keyboard, LTE, large battery? You'll have a great time stuffing that big mac into your pocket, ha ha. :D

Well the leaked device had a keyboard and 1800mah battery which I would consider large. Plus the super amoled screen is supposed to help with battery and it seems to help with the charge since that seems to be the only lte phone getting half decent battery life. Also it was similar in size to the epic which to me isnt large but may be to some. You also have to remember the keyboard allows for more space for other components to be packed in there.

that's because in the grand scheme of things, they're just aggregators and messengers. people tell them things and they pass it on to us. if they knew anything concrete we wouldn't even be having this conversation right now. at this point it's all speculation.

True that: virtually everything I've read or seen on the Samsung Stratosphere, with rare exception, involves everyone quoting everyone else and very little original content. I don't think there's a shred of tangible evidence out there one way or another yet. Mad as we are, we have to admit that Verizon is doing one thing very, very well. And that's keeping this phone as secret as possible, for as long as possible.

So you are saying there are some Verizon testers out there talking about unreleased phones on twitter when verizon is tight lipped about it? If that's what you meant, it's hard to believe. could you capture some screen shots of that?

Yeah I don't feel like looking through 15,00 of blackman_x tweets if you don't believe me then you can look through it otherwise I could care less if you believe me or not since I'm not the one who said it I was just referring to testers who hinted at certain things. Also where do you think all these leaked pics come from? Not from verizon they come from testers come on are you new to cell phone tech or just being ignorant? Common sense is verizon never reveals anything until the last minute unless its an iphone.

I didn't mean any offense to you and was just curious on your source as I lost my old twitter account and can't search for it myself right now. Yeah, I don't know fully how they leak the photos and if that's common sense to you, why is it hard to share for folks like us?
Well, I can believe some of them are real after seeing YodaDroid on Bionic finally showed his test picture of Bionic after being spanked so much on Bionic forum.

Yeah, I don't get it either. Maybe RedRaider had a run-in with this blackman_x guy and now wants nothing to do with him or something?

And as one of yoda's primary spankers, I'm glad I did it and would do it again. You've gotta slap some of these boys silly before they give up any info. I wish Moto was that sensitive. I'd beat the crap out of that CEO if I thought it'd get us anything.

No offense taken I just don't want to look through the tweets back a few months to see them. I meant common sense about the pics leaking not the tweets.
