I have no idea what this icon is. Can someone tell me? It's between the blue tooth and wireless icon.

NFC (near field communication) is enabled. Like tap phones to share data, wallet pay, etc.

Does it take up data to keep it on?

Do you mean mobile data? I don't think so... It is more akin to rfid. Here is an article that can explain it in far greater detail than I can.
