Help What is this strange icon in the notification bar?

Renthorin

Newbie
It's in the far upper left. Looks like a small circle or dot??? It only appears a few times a day and for no particular reason that I can tell. It goes away as soon as I swipe down on the notification bar.

I have GPS off so it's not that, though it does look like the inner part of the GPS icon.

Any thoughts? Not a problem, more of a curiosity.

I agree. Just wish I knew which one. They are basically the same as what I had on my droid x but I never saw that symbol.

I've seen this from time to time. It seems to be some sort on a placeholder, but I haven't been able to figure out for what yet.

Do you normally have any persistent apps running?

OHhhh..... um..not that I know of besides what you see in my bar in the picture. I think next time it pops up I'm going to quit all running apps and see if it goes away.

I even googled "android notification bar symbols", looked at about 500 icons, and didn't see it.
The closest ones are, "a song is playing", "an app or service is using your location", and "multiple tethering". But none of those look exactly like yours.
Good luck with that one for sure. :what:

I keep my notification bar hidden.. never have seen that icon, but if I did, and found it removed when dragging the bar down, I'd go to my recovery area and do a cache wipe. It could be a remnant of an app/widget removed or modified/updated.

Turn off Note 2. Hold three buttons at once: volume up + home + power. Release all three quickly when the white letters "..Galaxy Note 2.." appear, wait for little Android guy to go away then the menu will appear.

Use volume down to navigate to and highlight "wipe cache partition." Let hit power. Let it happen.

The default, "reboot now" will be highlighted. Hit power and let it boot up.

If the icon is gone. There you go. If not, power down and carefully remove the sim and sd cards. Wait a minute and put them back in. Power up.

If the remnant lives on your external sd card, it may be time to have a look at its contents via file manager. ;)

cool that I'm not the only one with this. I think he's Sprint and I'm big V so it may not be the provider.

Frisco - what will a cache wipe do? Will I lose any settings or whatever?

You'd try to find the app which caused this strange notification with the app 'Notification History', free in Play Store.
Set up the app and when the strange notification appears again, Notification History will show all apps that have had notifications in the meantime.

But note, the app will show any notification that apps generate in the time span of monitoring, not only these on the notification bar ;)

soon we will all have the mark of the circle within a circle. We must assimilate. Assimilate or suffer.

Didn't want to make a new topic so figured I would drop this here. What is the icon right to the left of the Wifi icon? When I first had this phone, I'd see it flash it for a few seconds every so often. Now it's there at all times. What is it for? I did the T-Mobile update as well as updated to 4.1.2 this morning and that is when it started to stay put.

That's the Smart Stay/ Smart Rotation icon. To turn it off go to Settings > Display > Features. You have to uncheck both if you want to get rid of the icon.

Ok I figured it out, at least in my case.

fyi- 'notification history' did not show anything but it was a great suggestion anyway :-)

In my case, I have an application for playing cards called "Card Shark". Every time I quit the app, that little ball is there until I swipe down on the notification bar. Still not sure what the icon means but I know what's causing it.

I've just noticed this icon on my Note 2 last night as well. I'm pretty sure it's an app called Dualingo that's causing it, as it first appeared while I was using the app but since quitting out of it I haven't seen it again.
