What is turning on my screen?

Sometimes, almost at random it seems, when my screen is off, it will turn on and present in white type on a black background the time and other info. I've never seen it long enough to see it all. Any idea what causes this to happen? Might be handy if I could control it.

It sounds like you are describing air view. Look in setting under motion. When you reach toward the sensor it'll show missed calls and notifications.

This thing costs as much as a decent hooker, so yes, maybe I do caress it a bit more than is healthy.

It resembles quick view but I don't have cover with a Window. It's centered rather than at the top where the Window would be. I've been waving my hands over it like a third rate Street magician and can't seem to activate it.

Incidentally, I can only get this to work when the phone is laying horizontally. If it's in my dock, even unplugged from power, it won't work.

It only works when it is flat

Any number of Apps could be causing this.
You'll have to go through your download apps and TouchWiz...... If you get lucky reading the info, that will direct you to the app, maybe.

If you have quick view enabled (quick glance on the Note 2) your screen should come on when you move your hand near the sensor giving you a brief glimpse - You state yours comes on at midnight which makes me think it's not quick view since QV isn't time specific.
