What?? No LTE???

I saw the news about the price drop on the Nexus 4, and decided that was the push I need to upgrade my GNex. I like the N4, but at $350 to upgrade, my GNex was good enough. Now though I can't resist.

I'm sure there will be a new Nexus phone in the next couple months, but I am betting it won't be $250. I guess we'll see, though.

Anyway, what I found funny was when I looked at articles about the price drop. Any mainstream kind of media (not phone sites) still seems to feel it necessary to point out that the phone does not have LTE. Whether that was an omission at $350 is debatable, but at $250? Give me a break. Also, it's the same phone as it was back in November 2012 when it debuted without LTE. No shocker it still doesn't have it...

The sites are probably pointing that out since many phones have LTE now. But ya, I don't think anyone would assume LTE was added to the Nexus 4.

I think you can root it and get access to LTE

I don't need LTE. I'm happy to get double HSPA speeds over my GNex. I just thought it was interesting that the LTE thing is still being harped on. Google explained pretty clearly why they didn't include it. Users have shown that some pretty fast speeds can be had on DC-HSPA+. And also, it's a freaking cheap phone now. Yet apparently you can't write about the Nexus 4 without pointing it out.

I have LTE on T-Mobile, just takes a little bit of tinkering. There's a whole thread about enabling it in the root subforum. If you're using the stock rom, make sure you flash the muted audio bug as well or else phone calls might get frustrating.

I thought that only worked in some markets - basically the ones that operate LTE on a particular frequency .. but I have no idea as I've never felt the need for LTE - or the need to pay the premium demanded for it here in the UK :D

Is that an LTE bug or a regular bug? Coz I never heard of it

I was just about to re root and flash the radio for to enable LTE again.
Luckily I read this. Never heard of this. I was on a custom ROM before but staying stock for now.
Where can we get this file from?
Then will it be 1) flash the .33 radio then 2) flash the muted audio bug?

Thanks

It does really only have LTE on one band which is band 4 (1700/2100). It just so happens that it's a popular band in the US and Canada. Almost every Canadian carrier uses it and in the US, T-Mobile uses it and AT&T has it in some markets. The the muted audio occurs because the .33 radio doesn't play nice with newer kernels. That why you need to flash the audio fix or be on a custom rom that already has it baked into it.

There's a little more too it than that. After you flash those two things, you have to add/edit 3 lines in the build.prop(which is why you need root), use a dial code to enable LTE, and then possible change an APN in order to pull the LTE from your carrier.

I'm with Bell. I don't have to change the APN. Didn't have to the last time when I was rooted.
As for editing the 3 lines in the build.prop, isn't that only if I want LTE to stick after a reboot? I was fine with not having it stick. So, in essence, if I'm not concerned with getting LTE to stick, is all I have to do is flash the radio and flash the muted audio bug? And what order?
Just need to find the muted audio bug zip.

Thanks

They only turned off LTE due to the cost of getting it tested and licenced. If they did do it, the price of the handset would be much higher.

You might not have had to because your sim card or rom came pre-loaded with the correct one for LTE. As for the build prop edits, 1 is for adding the menu option to your settings app and the other two are for making it stick iirc. Apparently from what I've read, the muted audio bug is fixed by flashing a "hyrbid" radio(I use the .33/.84 hybrid). I actually found a 1-flash zip from xda that apparently does everything for you. :)

Last question.
This will work if I stay on the stock ROM?

Thanks you all the help. I hope others were helped out to.

Yes, using it on the stock run was fine except for the muted audio bug. However if you flash that zip for the hybrid radio, that will fix it. The only downside is that trying to take otas will always call, so you will have to update manually.
