Root What Recovery System do yall have for the Moment?

Android Expert
Well I am sorry to have to post such a lame thread.
I have an Lg Ally and am no Stranger to Rooting and using Recovery systems.

I have a friend with a moment and would like to back up his phone so he can Root and play with it and have No worries.

So Do you guys just use Rom Manager and then flash ClockWork or is there some other Recovery that you use?

Also will Z4ROOT work for rooting you guys?

Thanks for all of your help. :D

Partially lifted from another thread:
You will need a Windows pc, recovery 3.1.1, and a custom kernal. The kernal is what actually gets you root access.

Here's a link to the thread over at sdx. It provides pretty good instructions and download links for everything you'll need, except the kernal (older link that goes to the forum instead of the needed post), so I've also supplied a download link for inxane's 0.6.5 kernal (the newest).

[HOW TO] Get Deodexed Rooted Stock DJ07 & BEYOND!

http://www.sdx-downloads.com/devs/inxane/moment/inxane065.zip

Not mentioned in those instructions is where to put the kernal.zip. After recovery 311 is installed it should create a folder called 'sdx' on your microsd card, with a 'zip' folder inside that. That is where you'll put the inxane065.zip, and anything else that installs via zip later on (themes, ROMs, apps2sd, etc). You can access that folder by removing the microsd card and using it in an adapter on your computer; or plug the phone into the computer with a USB cable, pull down the notification bar and press 'USB connected', press 'Mount', and navigate to the folder in Windows Explorer. Don't forget to unmount after transferring the files.

Also, you cannot boot into recovery while a usb cable is plugged in. Just thought I'd mention that to save you frustration. I went crazy one day because I forgot that minor detail.

Hmm wow so no other recovery like Clock work and Z4Root wont work?

That stinks. I was hoping this would be a painless one.
The main thing is I do want to get him a fast Rom. That one that says 9.3 -9.5 Mflops sounds cool.
You guys are getting Dangerously close the some of our Ally's speeds. :D

I mean have you guys ever tried Z4ROOT? I am sure you have. anyway just thought I would ask.

So this recovery 3.1.1..... you cant just boot into it by a series of button pushes? or by using Quickboot?

THanks for the Info.

no Z4root doesn't work (I tried)

once you install recovery, you turn your phone off. Then turn it back on by pressing volume down, green button and red button.
that boots the phone into recovery.

basically, you'll follow that link to gain root access.
(the kernal doesn't grant you root access, installing that recovery program does)
it is a pretty good write up.

Once you have rooted, you'll download the ROM you want to use, then put that ZIP file into the zip folder that is within the sdk folder that is now on your sd card.
for "starters" I would recommend the radioactive froyo rom.
You don't have to go through the whole process again. You just have to put the .zip file in the correct folder.
The recovery program will do the rest.
Then you'll do the same thing with the latest Xsane kernal.
The one that comes already in the radioactive rom is good, but it isn't the latest version.

Then enjoy your phone and read up on some other roms.
Rumor has it the amstel 2.0 rom is faster, but pretty much all of them are going to be about 9 mflops.
The only way to get faster than that is to do your own custom kernal and rom.

Not a dead link. The whole site seems to be down today. I understand they've been hit by DoS attacks recently.

I used the Radioactive ROM (uses JIT to speed things up) for a while, and liked it, but then decided to try ARM11 (not compatible with JIT), so I reflashed. No ROM, just rooted, optimized ARM11, modified opengl drivers (strictly to get Angry Birds to run, otherwise not really needed), and of course deleted everything I didn't want.

I don't know how much screwing around with his phone your friend wants to do, but you might also want to try out the (un)official 2.2 that's now available at sdx. Many report that it feels quicker and smoother. I was thinking of trying it out next week.
