Root What rooted sytem do I have??

I am new, so please forgive terminology errors.

Can I find out what tool was used to root my HTC Desire? I note that there is some systems recommended and some not.

My phone was purchased in New Zealand, delivered from Hong Kong but it has a couple of Thai components. The info I got from the HTC Sync tool is:
Current System Firmware: 2.13.707.1 CL233262 release-keys
and an IMEI/MEID number.

Thanks,
Muzz

What do you mean rooted system? did you buy the phone second hand or something?

no rooted as in cracked, jailbroken etc. able to access the root. Or is there a difference between "rooted" and "Jailbroken". I see you are from NZ where rooted has quite different connotations!

lol yea ok... where did you buy the phone from? and just to clear it up, it is new?

If it is they do not come with root access, are you wanting to install custom ROM's? or you just having a play around?

1. Yes it is new..I've owned it for a month or so. Bought from eKing. They say on their site that the phones are jailbroken so don't try to upgrade the OS without expert help.

2. I like to have flexibility with whatever tech stuff I have. eg I like to be able to have apps on the SD card and upgrade to latest os. I have noted on this phone a couple of the apps..eg Angry Birds have migrated to the SD card.

ok well thats more like "unlocked" so it can work here, rooting is different ;) go to this site... www.unrevoked.com/ choose your phone, and download the software. then check out this site... Unlocker that is the guide you want to follow. check out steps 1 and 2, step 3 is S-OFF which turns the HTC security off (stay away from that for now untill you've figured everything else out).

After that you have root access you can start loading custom ROM's etc... Also check out SUroot's guides and the XDA forum for more technical stuff.

1. Check app drawer for an app called super user. If present, confirms rooted

2. Boot into recovery.

From off...
Hold vol down and press power.
Use vol down to highlight recovery
Press power to select.

If you have a triangle with an exclamation mark you have a HTC recovery meaning you were rooted with an old method of rooting that only works on early releases of desire

If you have a menu that has green writing and says clockworkmod or amonra, you were rooted using unrevoked or is set up in such a way that is consistent with unrevoked

I've just checked eKing's FAQs, and what they say is:

Q: Are all your phones unlocked?
A: Yes all of our phones are unlocked
Q: Are your iphones jailbroken?
A: Yes all of iphones are jailbroken.

Note: "iPhones are jailbroken", not "phones are jailbroken". The subsequent answer, which warns you not to upgrade the firmware yourself, is also about iPhones.

So follow SUroot's procedure to check, but I can't see anything there to suggest that an android phone from there will be rooted.

Coming from a NZ Citizen and Tech supplier here ;) none of the android phones in NZ come with root access... Not new anyways. Also Eking are stupid in my opinion for jailbreaking iPhones before sold and still offering a warranty lol

In the email I got from Eking once the product was shipped was the following, so I assumed the Desire was rooted.

"Please do not upgrade the operating system of your phone if you are not professional in Android, Eking takes no responsibility on any software issue of phones. " When I questioned this in an email they said: "This just means you can't update the current version on there.
But it you wanted a different version you will have to reflash the software."

I have checked and there is no Superuser in Apps so it must not be rooted acc to SURoot.

So it is an unlocked phone which cannot have the software updated? Or are there other issues?

Thanks for all the comments. Although I have done quite a bit or research, these have been very helpful.

Its definitely not rooted if that icon is not present.

You can update the software OTA (over the air) when / if updates are availalble. There is an option in teh settings menu somewhere (but cant remember where).

What is your software version? Settings>About phone

It sounds like they are not very good at explaining what they mean. I think that they are trying to say "mess with the software at your own risk, we take no responsibility".

I'm sure your options for updating are the same as anyone else's. You can accept an official Over The Air update when/if such a thing is released, as SUroot describes. Or you can root and flash whatever you like (at your own risk, because HTC will consider your warranty void if your phone is running modified firmware). Obviously in this forum you are talking to people who have decided that the second option is worth it ;).

It's interesting that they say "Eking takes no responsibility on any software issue of phones", when at the same time they are selling jailbroken iPhones! I'm with turnerpctech on this - selling jailbroken iPhones to people who may not understand the cat and mouse game with Apple is inviting problems.

LOL. Guys don't suggest muzzman to go and root his phone just like that. :D

He can use his phone just fine as it is. Soon he should be able to get even an OTA update for v2.3. Let him know his phone, build some relationship, and when the times comes he can decide himself if he wants to root or not. :)

No, that wasn't my intention, which is why I stated explicitly that rooting will void your warranty, and noted that the audience here is skewed to people who'd chosen to do that. But I did forget to add one caveat:

If you do root, you will not be able to accept future official Over The Air updates unless you unroot and revert to stock firmware first. It's one thing or the other.

But at the same time Muzzman does seem interested in the sort of options it gives, so I think the best advice would be to read around here (start with the FAQs) and learn what the pros and cons are. As you say, there's no hurry.

Incidentally, software version 2.13.707.1 is an Asian WWE (World-Wide English) Froyo release, which makes sense if it was imported from Hong Kong. That may be important to know if you do root, since it will identify the RUU (ROM Update Utility) you need to use if you need to unroot it.

If he is anything like me that will be within 7 days of having the phone. lol

Andrid version 2.2
Baseband version 2.6.32.15-gd96f2c0
htc-kernel@and18-231
Build: 2.13.707.1 cl233262 Release-Keys
Software Number 2.13.707.1

There has been various OTA updates pop up but up till now I have selected "cancel" because of the Eking comments.

Thanks for the concern and even though rooting seems a no brainer, I will be taking it slowly. I have already seen from comments on a number of sites how many have stuffed it up so I will be making sure I have my ducks all lined up first!

Hey Guys,

Im from NZ too, and have just rooted my Milestone (well I think I have) lol
I used Universal Androot.

But I have a question for the Kiwis on here, do you know of anyone that can mod Androids - or even a way to undate from 2.1 to 2.2?
I love my phone but it sucks that I cant save my apps to the SD. I down loaded a few different Apps - Link2SD , Rom Manager. I patitioned my SD (with ROM Manager, and also with a programe on my PC) but it still will not link the apps to my SD?
An my to the point where I'd just rather pay some one to sort it for me so i can get on with liven hahaha

Any Ideas?

@ OP sorry for jacking your thread bro...
