Help What should I be using my S3 for

S3Noob

Hi all,

I've had my S3 for a couple of weeks now, but all I've been using it for is email, browsing and a few games. With all the processing power the device has it seems a bit of a waste.

What are others using (plan to use) their S3 for?

The processing power is probably just to future proof the phone e.g. with any future android updates that come out.

i use satellite navigation, video calls, the great camera to take photos/video, and the s voice function which enables me to operate the phone via spoken instructions.

Sounds like you would be better off with a less capable device like the iPhone. ;)

I use my HTC incredible for finding new music and streaming and streaming it over my car's sweet sound system. The SG3 should make this process even more enjoyable.

I don't have an S3, but what I use my current phone will work, too.:

Music player - I stream music off of Pandora and GMusic all the time. It replaced my CD player in my car.

Audio books - I listen to books at work to take the monotony of what I do.

News - Mostly on the browser

Portable video player - Either I watch the occasional YouTube video or plug my phone into my TV through MHL and watch netflix through my phone if the cable goes out but I still have 4G :) It makes me sad that Samsung decided to go with their own format instead of true MHL so that I will have to buy a new connector if I wish to do this in the future.

GPS/Navigation - People always try to tell me directions. I just ask for the address or business name then punch it into GMaps and go. My GF and I like to go to different places, so having a GPS wherever I go is nice. Then we can browse the internet to look for specific information. I will convert her to the smartphone side of the world eventually :) She uses a feature phone that is 3 years old.

Weather information - via widgets

Monthly planner - I usually put expected events, holidays, etc into Jorte (a calendar app) and can see what's coming up at a glance.

Barcode scanner - At work, we track things through serial numbers. I use barcode scanner to help me track SNs.

Calculator - why do math in your head when you have a computer? Isn't that what a computer is named for? :p

Texting - I use Google Voice for my text messaging needs. But I don't think it's available outside of the US, unfortunately.

Occasionally, it serves as a phone.

Video calling via skype or any other app?
NFC tags to quickly change settings at work/car/bedtime?
(Angry birds? :P)

I'll assume you also use it for talking to people on the phone. You know, the traditional use for a telephone. :)

Yeah, I suppose it is a waste. But so what? The average computer is far more powerful than it has to be to do the things most people do on their computers - email, web browsing, an occasional game of solitaire, maybe some simple word processing, etc.

(And yes, I acknowledge that some people do engage in computationally intensive tasks, and do need the fastest, most memory-laden, all 'round most capable computer money can buy. But such people are nowhere near as numerous as the folks who rarely engage in any task more demanding of computer resources than watching a youtube video or making a purchase from amazon.com.)

I not infrequently use my cell phone to listen to broadcasts accessed by TuneIn Pro, and output via my car's built-in bluetooth system.

While listening to this, I may well be using the phone for GPS navigation. (Although my Garmin 1490 has not quite been relegated to the scrap heap, just yet.)

I'm an amateur astronomer, and have seen people visit the local observatory on Open House nights, and some of them are beginning to make use of Google Sky. I myself use Sky Map, once in a while. Satellite AR and ISS Lookout are two other astronomy apps on my "need to check this out" list.

I have the chess app, Droidfish, on my phone. The more computer power it has to work with, the stronger it is. And if I'm using it to analyze a game, it's nice to have all the strength possible.

I use my phone for many other things, but the above probably make more use of its "computer muscle," than do the text messaging app or the WeatherBug app. And I plan on running them all on my soon-to-be-delivered S3.

If you don't know what to do w/ your S3 for goodness sake send it my way!!!

A second thumbs up for TuneIn, or A Online Radio. I love following my home city stations that I grew up with. Or searching for a 60's or 70's radio station.

It's like a great, albeit expensive, portable radio.

A second thumbs up for TuneIn
Yeah, it's definitely one of those apps which I can see myself using frequently, and for a long time to come. I mean, 60,000 radio stations from all over the world, and 2 million programs available on demand - and it's simple to use and works well. What's not to like?

The pro version even lets me record programs for later playback. I think it costs an extra 99 cents, but I recall it being on sale for 25 cents, earlier this spring.

(If I wanted to be mean, I'd suggest that the next iPhone will have the very similar app - InTune - built-in. It'll be able to get over 200 radio stations, but it'll be, you know, an integral organism in Apple's iEnvironment. And then Apple will try to block further distribution of TuneIn, claiming that it violates Apple's patent on 6-letter words containing vowels.) (But I see no need to be mean, so I won't suggest any such thing.)

Play video games on your HDTV with your Galaxy S3 controlled by a PS3 controller, including multiplayer games. Hook up a bluetooth keyboard and mouse with it plugged into an external display and use apps like Splashtop for RDP functions. Use some sports tracking apps to monitor your fitness training.

...possibilities near endless!

I will use mine to surf adult websites...

I mean for texting, email, social media, movies, pictures, streaming media, navigation, planner, etc. I do more things with my phone then I can mention... But honestly I'll probably do more of the first thing I listed than everything else listed combined.

Just being honest.

Still finding my way round the s3, it's my first android, apart from the usual I will also be building a top-notch p0rn collection. You can never have too much p0rn. My iphone was always stuffed full of it lol

Is there a clause in the user agreement forbidding it?

Please advise, I'm not being a smart ass.

Seriously.

I also emailed the system admin for a copy of the user agreement. Please see that they forward that to me asap.

Oh yeah I also use it for music, in the car and the office.

That's what I've moved from, so I guess I need to get out of that mind set.

I've seen a Wi-Fi display hub that has me thinking of doing something similar. Get a movie encode it to play on the phone, then watch it on the big screen. Not sure how well that would work.
