What Text Messaging App?

The stock text messaging system seems to be just a little to plain and generic. Even though it works flawlessly, I've decided to do a search for some other possible apps to replace the stock text messaging system. So far I've downloaded chompSMS, Handcent SMS, and SMS (which seems to be an enhanced version of the stock one)

Curious on which ones you guys are running and the benefits of some over the others? I do like the apps over the stock one since you can reply to the text immediately after unlocking the phone and don't have to click an actual icon.

Downloaded Chops SMS yesterday. LOVE it. Only one I have tried and will not try another. It spices up your texts and you can customize your notification to whatever you want. Even custom vibrate sounds.

Only thing is, on the icon on the screen, I wish it had the number of unread txts you have. It has never shown that for me. Just has the icon at the top when you have a message. Otherwise, 100% satisfied with it.

Tried both Hancent and Chomp, and stuck with Handcent because I like the notifcation system better. Both are actually quite obtrusive to be honest, but what I like you may not.

Might be a dumb question, but did you add the chompSMS "small" widget to your screen or just a shortcut to the app? I've added chompSMS to three phones and they've all displayed the message count on the "small" widget.

And obviously, chompSMS for me :) The bubbles annoyed me at first, but now I'm used to them and actually prefer them. Also like that it (optionally) turns the screen on when you receive a text. I would suggest spending some time in the settings -- if you leave it as installed, you'll get an annoying prompt every time you get a text.

Haven't tried chompsms, but I love handsent, lots of cutomizing and I love being able to reply to text from the lock screen.

Does Handcent have the text count widget? Chomp and Handcent both seemed very similar to me when I tried, but I don't remember there being a widget, or maybe I just didn't know how to find it at the time.

yes handcent have a count widget..just add handcent widget(icon) onto the screen you want it on

has anyone been able to have chompSMS have the text underneath the time (if phone was asleep, and wakes up) basically like a preview before the lock code screen?

seems like the default text messaging did this but not aware of other apps...

I un-installed handcent last week and my battery life has been phenomenal since. Just put on the charger at 4% after 40 hours. I didn't make any other changes. If in fact it was the handcent taking some battery life ill stick with stock.

Ahhhh. I see. Yeah I just added the icon to my screen. I was wondering why it never showed a count. I will add the widget. Thanks!

Also, where in the settings can I have it where when I receive a text, it is not on the screen when i unlock the phone as the stock messaging app is? Sometimes I just want to view the texts when I want, not have them sitting there right away.

Tried both Hancent and Chomp, went with Handsent. For some odd reason, Chomp would always crash when someone would send me a picture.

It says on the chompsms website that you pay 12 cents per text, even if you have sprint's unlimited texts?

How about, no?

That would make me switch off stock. It sort of annoys me to have the scrolling preview. I will look at texts when I feel like it, a count on the icon is good enough.

I tried chomp on my first day with android...I never went back, but I needed to disable the stock one and never did, so that annoyed me too. Never was important enough for me to research.

Not true. You only pay them by buying credits, otherwise, standard rates apply. So if you have unlimited, you have no worries.

Open up the stock message app. Go to Settings and then unclick the box for notifications. Then only Chomps will show up for your texts. They still go to the stock one but you have to go into and open it up to see them.

I used Chomp SMS on my Samsung Moment, but I like the stock messaging app on the Evo. Unfortunately, it hasn't been working flawlessly. :(

ive tried both chomp sms and handcent both are great because of all the things you can customize but ive been sticking with the stock app recently because they both started giving me a few problems and glitching. is there any way to make the background of the conversation list on the stock app black? i have seen it done on other android phones??

I'm sure if you root the phone you can mess with it more but I have not seen any customization at all for the stock message app which is why I switched.
